Why don’t I have my period after I stopped taking birth control pills?

Many couples or spouses who do not want children will choose oral short-acting contraceptives. The main ingredients of contraceptives are progesterone and estrogen, which can cause endocrine system disorders in women and are not recommended. So some women will have menstrual disorders. Let's take a look at why menstruation does not come after stopping taking birth control pills?

Why don't I have my period after I stopped taking birth control pills?

First of all, we should know that after stopping short-acting contraceptives, withdrawal bleeding will generally occur within 3 days. Withdrawal bleeding is vaginal bleeding similar to menstruation. But there is a difference between withdrawal bleeding and menstruation. Withdrawal bleeding caused by birth control pills is forced drug withdrawal bleeding caused by the decrease in progesterone levels in the body after stopping taking birth control pills. It only serves as a psychological comfort for women and is not the bleeding that should occur during the normal menstrual cycle.

Next, let’s take a look at what the main active ingredient in birth control pills is – progesterone. Progesterone is a type of female endocrine hormone released by the corpus luteum, so it is also called progesterone. The corpus luteum is derived from the ovarian follicle. During each menstrual cycle of a woman, as estrogen increases, the excellent follicle cells will develop into eggs, and the best developed egg will be released from the ovary. After the egg is released, the follicle that protects the egg's development will decay into a corpus luteum and release progesterone. The function of progesterone is to convey information to the body: ovulation has occurred in this cycle, and all organs are ready for conception! After receiving the notification from progesterone, the brain will issue various commands. First, the ovaries will be ordered to prohibit ovulation again. This is because an egg has already been produced and all resources must be used on this egg without distraction. Moreover, eggs fertilized at different times will make childbirth difficult, so ovulation will be prohibited again after ovulation. The brain will then command the body to raise its basal body temperature. New life needs a relatively warm environment to develop healthily. After ovulation, a woman's basal body temperature will increase by 0.3-0.5℃. Progesterone also makes the cervical mucus lubricated and thinner, making it easier for sperm to pass through the cervix and reach the uterus and the end of the fallopian tube.

From the above two points, we know that progesterone makes women think they are pregnant, thereby suppressing ovulation. This method of contraception will not have any effect on women's bodies in the short term, because the pregnancy period is about 1 year. Therefore, if the short-acting contraceptive is used for a period longer than the pregnancy period, it will have a certain impact on women. One of the most common effects is amenorrhea.

Note:

In fact, it is normal not to have menstruation after stopping taking birth control pills for a long time. If amenorrhea occurs, don't worry. After a female endocrine disorder occurs, it will usually return to normal automatically within 3 months. Please be patient. If you still haven't had your period for more than three months, or if your menstrual cycle is still very irregular, you should seek medical help. The female endocrine system has always been a mystery and is affected by many factors. One aspect that affects endocrine is psychology. If you experience amenorrhea, don't put too much pressure on yourself. Too much pressure, panic, etc. will be counterproductive. Under normal circumstances, irregular menstruation will automatically recover within one month, and the longest time will not exceed 3 months. If you haven't recovered in three months, it's not too late to try medical methods.
