What's going on with the fishy smell down there?

Women have secretions every day. Under normal circumstances, women's secretions are colorless and odorless, and most of them are white or transparent. If you find that the color and taste of your secretions have changed, and are accompanied by a foul or fishy smell, then it means that there is an inflammatory disease in the uterus or vagina, and you need to get checked as soon as possible.

Common causes of abnormal leucorrhea: Leucorrhea is a mixture of vaginal mucosal exudates, cervical canal and endometrial gland secretions, and its formation is related to the action of estrogen. Normal leucorrhea is white, paste-like or egg white-like, highly viscous, has no fishy smell, and is small in amount. It has no adverse effects on women's health and is called physiological leucorrhea. However, if inflammation occurs in the reproductive tract, especially vaginitis and cervicitis, or if cancer occurs, the amount of vaginal discharge will increase significantly and its properties will also change, which is called pathological changes.

Common pathological leucorrhea in clinical practice include:

1. Colorless, transparent, sticky leucorrhea: It is egg white-like and similar in properties to the mucus secreted by the cervical glands during ovulation, but the amount is significantly increased. Generally, the possibility of chronic endocervicitis, ovarian dysfunction, vaginal adenosis, or well-differentiated cervical adenocarcinoma should be considered.

2 White or grayish yellow foamy leucorrhea: It is a characteristic of Trichomonas vaginitis and may be accompanied by vulvar itching.

3. Curd-like (tofu-like) leucorrhea: It is a characteristic of candidal vaginitis, often accompanied by severe vulvar itching or burning pain, or pain during sexual intercourse.

4Gray homogeneous leucorrhea with fishy smell: common in bacterial vaginitis.

5. Purulent leucorrhea: yellow or yellow-green in color, sticky, and often smelly. It can be caused by acute vaginitis, cervicitis, and endocervicitis caused by bacteria such as Trichomonas or gonococci. Pyometra, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer or foreign bodies in the vagina can also cause purulent leucorrhea. 6. Bloody leucorrhea: If there is blood mixed in the leucorrhea, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical polyps or submucosal fibroids should be considered. Insertion of an intrauterine device can also cause bloody vaginal discharge.

7 Watery leucorrhea: Continuous discharge of watery leucorrhea like rice washing water with a peculiar odor is generally caused by advanced cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, or submucosal fibroids with infection. If you have intermittent discharge of yellow or red watery vaginal discharge, you should be aware of the possibility of fallopian tube cancer.
