Causes and treatment of menstrual pain and diarrhea

Dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological disease. Some people experience simple lower abdominal pain, while others may experience other symptoms of gastrointestinal dysfunction, such as loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, etc. These are all manifestations of premenstrual syndrome. When the symptoms are obvious, you need to see a doctor in time to find out the cause and receive targeted treatment.

In general, during menstruation, there is a slight feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen due to pelvic congestion. This is normal and not pathological. However, when the pain is severe, even to the point of affecting daily life and work, and requiring medication, it becomes a pathological condition, medically known as dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea caused by genital organ diseases is called secondary dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea without organic lesions of the reproductive organs is called primary dysmenorrhea.

Western medicine believes that during the menstrual period, the secretion of prostaglandins and hormones causes the uterine muscles to contract. When prostaglandins enter the blood vessels and affect other muscles, such as the colon muscles, diarrhea can occur. Doctors recommend consuming more fiber-rich fruits and vegetables such as broccoli and apples when menstruation is about to come, so that the stool will not become loose easily.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that diarrhea during menstruation is caused by a weak and cold constitution. The spleen is responsible for transportation and transformation, which are related to the stomach and intestines, so people with poor spleen are also prone to diarrhea during menstruation. Doctors recommend not eating cold food before and after menstruation, and eating cooked vegetables is better than eating raw ones. Fruits and melons are cold in nature, so people with diarrhea should avoid them.

Gynecological diseases can also cause menstrual pain and diarrhea

Many gynecological diseases can also cause dysmenorrhea and diarrhea, such as endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition in which benign tissue in the uterus spreads outside the uterus, causing various lesions that may lead to chocolate cysts or adenomyosis, or even infertility. The most typical symptom of endometriosis is menstrual pain, but it is also often accompanied by diarrhea. About 35% of endometriosis patients will have diarrhea during their menstrual period. Therefore, if there is obvious discomfort or abnormality during the menstrual period, you must seek medical treatment immediately.
