What does the left eyelid twitching indicate? What does the eyelid twitching indicate and what does it represent? Superstition has it that eyelid twitching can occur in different genders, and the signs vary for different genders. As the old saying goes, men’s eyelids are on the left and women’s are on the right. If a woman’s right eyelid twitches, it means bad luck, while if her left eyelid twitches, it means good luck. But no matter what, according to scientific evidence, what does eyelid twitching indicate? It is a sign of poor sleep, or that the eye nerves are being disturbed by external factors.

What causes left eyelid twitching?

When the facial nerves that control the eye muscles are stimulated or compressed, they contract, causing the eyelids (medically known as eyelids) to twitch. There are two kinds of muscles in the human eyelids. One is called the orbicularis oculi muscle, which is shaped like a wheel and surrounds the eye. When it contracts, the eyelid will close. This orbicularis oculi muscle is controlled by the facial nerve. Another eyelid muscle, the levator palpebrae superioris, contracts to open the eyelid; this muscle is controlled by the oculomotor nerve. Of the two types of eyelid muscle tissue, the orbicularis oculi muscle plays an important role in protecting the eyeball. It can lubricate and clean the cornea through continuous closure and respond protectively to any external stimulation.

Under normal circumstances, these eye opening and closing activities are controlled by the brain nerves. However, once the facial nerve that controls the orbicularis oculi muscle is stimulated by some external factors, it may act autonomously without following the brain's command, causing the orbicularis oculi muscle to contract repeatedly, or even spasm or tremor. People will clearly feel their eyelids twitching involuntarily. This is eyelid twitching.
