Glucose tolerance test process for pregnant women

Glucose tolerance test process for pregnant women

What are the steps for sugar screening for pregnant women? Among the many prenatal check-up items, the one that is probably the most uncomfortable for pregnant mothers is the oral grape sugar test (OGTT). To do this experiment, you must be on an empty stomach, and drink a large glass of glucose water on an empty stomach. Even pregnant mothers with no stomach problems can hardly bear it.

What are the steps for sugar screening for pregnant women? There are two ways to test the glucose tolerance of pregnant women: oral red grape sugar screening and intravenous red grape sugar screening. Generally, prenatal check-ups during pregnancy are mainly based on oral red grape sugar screening. Their test steps are as follows:

1. Take red grape sugar sieve orally (75g OGTT)

Purpose of examination: To determine whether there is gestational diabetes

Inspection content: 75g red grape sugar tolerance screening

Preparation for the test: Eat normally three days before the test, and fast from dinner the day before the test to the morning of the test, that is, you cannot eat or drink after 19:00 the night before the blood test.

Inspection method: A total of 4 blood tests were conducted, with one fasting blood test.

Inspection process: A. Take 2 ml of venous blood on an empty stomach and re-examine immediately. B. 75 grams of glucose (dissolved in 200 ml of water).

C. Take it orally within 3 to 5 minutes, record the time from the first sip, draw 2 ml of venous blood 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after drinking the red bean syrup, and retest immediately. Some hospitals will collect urine for re-test (to measure urine sugar) at the same time as each blood test.

2. Intravenous Grape Sugar Screening (IGTT)

When using this method for accurate measurement, OGTT is no longer suitable for various situations such as gastrointestinal absorption abnormalities, gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastrointestinal compliance and rapid absorption after gastric surgery, or intestinal dysfunction affecting gastrointestinal absorption, and IGTT can be used instead.

The method is: use 25% or 50% glucose injection, 0.5 grams per kilogram of body weight, and inject it intravenously within 2-4 minutes. Starting from the initial injection, blood was drawn every 30 minutes for a total of 2-3 hours. In normal people, the blood sugar level drops to the normal range within 2 hours. If the blood sugar level exceeds the standard value after 2 hours, it indicates impaired glucose tolerance.

Common questions before sugar screening

1. Eat normally 3 days before the experiment

Three days before the experiment, the dietary carbohydrate intake (i.e. rice and pasta) should not be less than 150 grams. If the experimenters intentionally reduce the amount of regular meals, the test results will be inaccurate, resulting in an incorrect diagnosis.

2. Avoid excessive exercise and maintain a stable mood

Normal physical activity is required 3 days before the experiment. However, excessive exercise before the experiment can excite the central nervous system and increase blood sugar. Infection, trauma, and strong fluctuations in mood can excite the central nervous system and affect the results of the glucose tolerance test.

3. Empty stomach

When doing sugar screening, pregnant mothers must fast for 8 to 14 hours to truly reflect their blood sugar levels. For example, if you are making red grape sugar screening at 8 o'clock in the morning, it is best not to eat after 10 o'clock the night before. You can drink water, but not tea or coffee. The first fasting blood sample is used to check the sugar level in the blood, which is called the baseline test.
