Can I eat Bupleurum during menstruation?

Bupleurum is an herbal medicine included in the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia". The medicinal part is the dried root of Bupleurum or Bupleurum chinense, which belong to the Umbelliferae family. According to their different properties, they are commonly known as Northern Bupleurum and Southern Bupleurum. Dig up in spring and autumn, remove stems, leaves and mud, and dry. Bupleurum is a commonly used antipyretic drug. Also known as ground smoked grass, mountain vegetable, mushroom grass, and firewood.

Pharmacological effects of Bupleurum:

⑴ Antipyretic, it has obvious antipyretic effect on fever caused by typhoid and paratyphoid vaccines, Escherichia coli liquid, fermented milk, yeast, etc.

⑵ Anti-inflammatory, it has inhibitory effects on ankle joint swelling and connective tissue proliferative inflammation caused by various inflammatory agents.

⑶ Promote immune function, enhance phagocytic function and natural killer cell function, increase virus-specific antibody titer, increase lymphocyte translocation rate, and improve skin delayed allergic reaction.

⑷ Anti-liver damage.

Bupleurum is bitter in nature and slightly cold. It enters the liver and gallbladder meridians. It has the effects of reconciling the exterior and interior, soothing the liver, and raising yang. Bupleurum is often used to treat colds and fevers, alternating chills and fever, malaria, liver depression and qi stagnation, chest and rib pain, rectal prolapse, uterine prolapse, and irregular menstruation. Therefore, you can safely take Bupleurum during your menstrual period. However, when using Bupleurum to treat diseases, there are some contraindications that we need to pay attention to, such as: it should not be used or used with caution by those with hyperactivity of liver yang, internal liver wind, yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire, and upward flow of qi. The dried rhizome of large-leaf Bupleurum has densely covered rings on the surface and is poisonous, so it cannot be used as Bupleurum.
