Only 11 years old! Fujian boy diagnosed with fatty liver, his mother regrets: He eats every day... Parents should stop spoiling him

In the pediatric clinic of the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Fuzhou University,

11-year-old Xiaoyu (pseudonym)

I came to see the doctor accompanied by my parents.

The reason is that Xiaoyu's "little Ding Ding" looks too small,

The family is worried that this will affect his future fertility.

After an examination, Lin Xinfu, chief pediatrician, found that Xiaoyu's main problem was obesity - his penis was buried in fat tissue. After further examination, Xiaoyu was diagnosed with obesity , weighing 72 kilograms and a BMI of 28.58, which was higher than 95% of his peers. The examination also showed that Xiaoyu had black acanthosis on his body, purple lines on his buttocks, and moderate fatty liver , and his liver function was abnormal .
Upon hearing the doctor's diagnosis, Xiaoyu's mother was shocked. She couldn't believe that her "fat and white" son's liver had "red lights" on .
After further questioning, Lin Xinfu learned that Xiaoyu's family cooked meat dishes in different ways every day, but turned a blind eye to the intake of green vegetables. Xiaoyu's family always gave in to his requests for high-fat and high-sugar foods such as fried chicken and drinks . In the eyes of his family, the "chubby" Xiaoyu was their pride.

Although Xiaoyu's mother thought it was not good for her child to be fat, she did not pay much attention to it because he was young. It was not until Xiaoyu entered primary school that his physical education scores always failed . He was out of breath after running for a few steps, and it was difficult to do sit-ups and skipping rope. Considering that the physical education scores would be included in the high school entrance examination, Xiaoyu's mother decided to help him lose weight .

Childhood obesity is not an isolated case

Xiaoyu's situation is not an isolated case . Statistics from the Chinese Medical Association's Endocrinology Branch show that the overweight and obesity rate among children and adolescents aged 6-17 in China has reached 19%, which means that one in every five primary and secondary school students is overweight or obese .

A survey of 1,500 primary and secondary school students in Beijing by the Epidemiology Research Office of the Capital Institute of Pediatrics showed that the detection rate of fatty liver in obese children was as high as 10.2% , 51 times that of children with normal weight, and the detection rate in severely obese children was as high as over 40% .

The China Childhood Obesity Report predicts that if no effective intervention is taken, the overweight and obesity detection rate among children aged 7 and above will reach 28.0% by 2030. However, parents generally ignore children's weight management.

Lin Xinfu found that most parents who brought their children to the clinic were concerned about precocious puberty or dwarfism, while fewer were concerned about weight problems. "Parents often bring their obese children to the clinic only because they failed the physical education exam."

It is urgent to pay attention to weight management

In addition to children, the impact of obesity on people of all ages cannot be underestimated. According to Wen Junping, chief physician of the Department of Endocrinology at the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Fuzhou University, adipose tissue is not only an energy storage depot, but also an active endocrine organ that can secrete a variety of hormones and cytokines . When there is too much fat in the body, the secretion of hormones and cytokines is abnormal, which will disrupt the balance of the endocrine system and cause a series of health problems.

As of 2021, China has 402 million overweight and obese adults aged 25 and above, ranking first in the world. Nearly 30% of Chinese adults suffer from abdominal obesity (beer belly). Obesity has become a major public health issue in China, ranking sixth among the country's risk factors for death and disability .

At this year's two sessions, the National Health Commission clearly stated that it is important to pay attention to weight management for all people. Weight management is not just for a good figure, it is related to the health of everyone at different stages of life . Whether it is children, teenagers, adults or the elderly, its importance cannot be ignored.
