The vast majority of renal cysts are benign conditions and there is no need to panic. However, a small number of renal cysts are cystic renal cancer, which is a malignant disease and requires timely surgical treatment.

Cystic kidney disease refers to a series of diseases in which single or multiple fluid-filled cysts appear in the kidneys, among which simple renal cysts are the most common, followed by polycystic kidney disease.

Simple renal cysts have almost no impact on renal function, and the probability of malignant transformation is extremely small. For patients without symptoms and complications, no treatment is required, and only an ultrasound check every six months to a year is required.

Renal cysts require prompt medical treatment or surgical treatment in the following situations:

Causes back pain, urinary tract infection or bleeding, ruptured or ruptured cysts;

Larger cysts with a diameter greater than 5 cm;

Giant cysts with a diameter greater than 10 cm and a volume greater than 500 ml;

Cysts suspected of cancer or cysts that recur after puncture;

Complex renal cysts are classified as Bosniak grade III or above;

Parapelvic cysts or cysts that communicate with the renal pelvis;

Acquired renal cysts in dialysis patients with more than 3 cysts and retroperitoneal bleeding, infection and/or renal cancer;

Patients with medullary sponge kidney have repeated episodes of kidney stones, pyelonephritis, and sepsis.
