Fact check: Skipping rope is not the "best exercise for weight loss" and may even be harmful to these people!

What topic posters promoting the so-called “best exercise for weight loss” will never tell you:

1. Not suitable for people with arthritis: Skipping rope will bring greater impact to the knees, ankles and hip joints, and may "aggravate joint inflammation" and pain for people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Not suitable for patients with heart disease: Rope skipping is a medium to high intensity aerobic exercise. For patients with heart disease, excessive exercise load may cause excessive fatigue of the heart and increase the risk of angina pectoris or "myocardial infarction".

3. Not suitable for patients with hypertension: Although moderate aerobic exercise can help control high blood pressure, skipping rope may cause a "temporary increase" in blood pressure due to its high intensity, posing risks to patients with hypertension.

4. Not suitable for patients with osteoporosis: skipping rope will cause impact on bones, and the bones of patients with osteoporosis are more fragile, which may increase the risk of "fractures".

5. Not suitable for patients with lumbar disc herniation: The vibration and impact force during rope skipping may aggravate the symptoms of lumbar disc herniation and lead to "intensified low back pain."

6. Not suitable for overweight or obese people: being overweight or obese will increase the burden of skipping rope on the knees and ankle joints, increasing the risk of "injury".

7. Not suitable for patients with retinal hemorrhage or retinal problems: Strong jumping movements may increase intraocular pressure, which may "aggravate the condition" for people with eye diseases such as retinal hemorrhage or retinal detachment.

In addition, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) is just a "non-profit organization" formed by relevant professional certified personnel, and the content they publish is not all "research" (Research & Studies), but more "insight blogs" (ACEInsights Blog).

Content such as #skipping rope is the best exercise for weight loss# is usually written in blogs, but in fact, ACE does not have such a statement.

If you search for the content they posted, not only will you not find the statement pinned to the top of the topic (you can search the original English text on overseas self-media, Figure 2), but you will find this sentence on ACE: There is no such thing as "the best" exercise - Dr. Jessica Matthews
