Winter is the peak season for glaucoma, so glaucoma patients should be vigilant!

Since the beginning of winter, as the temperature gradually drops, many people have experienced eye swelling and pain, and even headaches, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. This may not be a gastrointestinal disease, but rather the induction of glaucoma. Winter is the peak season for glaucoma, so be vigilant in your daily life!

Why is glaucoma more likely to occur in winter?

1. Cold stimulation

The temperature drops sharply after winter. The cold stimulation will excite the sympathetic nerves. At this time, the pupils are prone to dilation, which may cause the angle of the chamber to suddenly close, causing the aqueous humor to fill up and the intraocular pressure to rise sharply in a short period of time, thus triggering a sudden attack of glaucoma.

2. The temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is too large

In winter, it is warm indoors and cold outdoors. If glaucoma patients suddenly experience a temperature change from hot to cold, the large temperature difference will affect the body's temperature regulation center, thereby affecting intraocular pressure, causing intraocular pressure fluctuations, and easily inducing an acute attack of glaucoma.

3. Drink plenty of water

The weather is dry in winter, and especially under the influence of air conditioning or heating, water loss can easily lead to dry mouth and tongue. Drinking a lot of water at this time can easily cause an acute increase in intraocular pressure, which may lead to glaucoma.

How do glaucoma patients protect their eyes in winter?

Li Fuhua, director of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that glaucoma patients should minimize outdoor activities in winter and pay attention to daily warmth. Before going out, you can stand in the corridor to let the temperature gradually transition and slowly adapt your body to the cold environment outside. Avoid drinking a lot of water. You can use a humidifier indoors to increase the air humidity in the room. Avoid excessive mood swings and keep a good mood. In addition, avoid looking down at your phone for a long time, keep sufficient light when using your eyes, and avoid eye fatigue.
