[The Fun Anatomist] The person is alive, but the butt is "dead"?

Do you often sit for a long time and feel your butt is weak, your back is sore, and your knees are tight? You may be suffering from hip syndrome!

We have already taken a brief look at "dead butt syndrome" before. Today, let's continue to explore this unpleasant but rather mysterious topic in depth!

The joy of anatomy

First, let's review some basic anatomical knowledge.

Dead butt syndrome, also known as gluteal amnesia, is often jokingly referred to as "endless butt pain," which sounds like a plot from a movie, but it's no joke when it occurs.

Your butt is a magical place, not just a place to sit. It includes muscles such as gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, which are one of the largest and strongest muscle groups in the human body. It is responsible for important functions such as supporting the pelvis, stabilizing the hip joint, extending and externally rotating the lower limbs, and participating in walking, running and various sports.

However, when we sit for a long time, these muscles may enter a "sleeping" state. At this time, the hip muscles are compressed and relaxed, the brain gradually forgets their existence, the transmission of nerve signals becomes weak, resulting in the muscles being unable to contract and relax normally, and the muscles gradually become lazy. This will cause a series of problems.

Cause

As our hip muscles lose strength and flexibility, our athletic performance declines, and movements like running, jumping, and climbing stairs become super tiring.

Secondly, because the hip muscles cannot effectively stabilize the pelvis and hip joints, our posture will become uncoordinated, with pelvic anterior tilt, excessive lumbar flexion, and knee inward buckling, etc. This will put too much pressure and burden on the waist, hip and knee joints, making your buttocks and waist feel extremely painful.

Complications

Because the hip muscles cannot effectively stabilize the hip joint, the hip joint will be subjected to excessive pressure and friction, leading to damage and inflammation of the articular cartilage;

Because the hip muscles cannot effectively support the spine, the waist muscles will over-contract to maintain the posture, resulting in strain and tension of the waist muscles;

Because the hip muscles cannot effectively control the movement of the legs, the knees will bear too much impact and torsional force, causing wear and tear of the knee cartilage;

Because the hip muscles cannot effectively regulate gait, the ankle may excessively rotate inward or outward, leading to ankle instability and sprains.

BE CAREFUL

Health tips

Stay active

Get up and walk around, stretch your butt muscles, or even try some yoga or stretching exercises to loosen up tight muscles. This is not a waste of time, it's an investment in your butt!

Pay attention to your posture

Choose a comfortable chair, maintain correct sitting posture, and use cushions to support your hips. This can relieve pressure and help your hip muscles stay active.

Healthy eating

Don't forget to eat right and live a healthy lifestyle. Sticking to healthy habits can improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and help relieve pain.

So, dear friends, dead butt syndrome may sound scary, but you can definitely beat it! Remember, active living, good posture, and a healthy lifestyle are your weapons. Who doesn't want to have a firm, perky, and healthy butt? Let's move towards a pain-free butt!
