Can cataracts be treated with medication?

Cataracts are mainly caused by aging, heredity, local nutritional disorders, immune and metabolic abnormalities, trauma, poisoning, radiation and other reasons that lead to lens metabolism disorders, resulting in lens opacity. However, lens opacity cannot be reversed.

Hua Xia, director of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that drug treatment can only delay the early degeneration and decline of the lens to a certain extent, but cannot truly cure cataracts. The current method of treating cataracts is to replace the cloudy lens with a transparent artificial lens through surgery.

What are the dangers of cataracts?

1. Hazards during the initial stage:

Vision gradually deteriorates and may be accompanied by blurred vision, monocular diplopia, polyvision, and dark shadows in front of the eyes, affecting the quality of vision.

2. Hazards during the expansion period:

Patients will experience eye pain, headaches, colored halos when looking at lights, and a sharp decrease in vision. If glaucoma occurs, the lens must be removed promptly, otherwise blindness may occur.

3. Hazards during maturity and over-maturity:

Some cataracts are too mature, and the liquefied cataract material leaks into the eye, which can induce uveitis. Some cataract patients will develop serious complications such as phacolytic glaucoma.

Can cataracts be prevented?

Cataracts, especially senile cataracts, are inevitable, but their progression can be slowed down. Develop good living habits, such as a balanced diet, a reasonable nutritional combination, and active physical exercise; wear a sun hat or sunglasses when doing outdoor activities to reduce the damage of ultraviolet rays to the lens. In addition, paying attention to the prevention and treatment of related eye diseases can also reduce the risk of cataracts.
