1. Case Details

As of January 26, there were 215,958 hospitalized cases of COVID-19 infection in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, with 26,156 cases in severe condition, including 1,894 cases of severe COVID-19 infection and 24,262 cases of severe underlying diseases combined with COVID-19 infection. From January 20 to 26, a total of 6,364 COVID-19-related deaths were reported in medical institutions in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, including 289 deaths from respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 infection and 6,075 deaths from underlying diseases combined with COVID-19 infection.

II. Vaccination Status

As of January 26, 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported a total of 348,974,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, with a total number of 131,020,700 people vaccinated, 127,654,900 people completing the full course of vaccination, and 82,658,300 people completing the first dose of booster vaccination. Among them, a total of 67,822,400 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were reported for the elderly over 60 years old, with a total number of 24,161,100 people vaccinated, 23,012,700 people completing the full course of vaccination, and 19,222,700 people completing the first dose of booster vaccination.

Previously, on January 25, the official website of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention released the national epidemic situation of novel coronavirus infection. In terms of nucleic acid test results, since December 9, 2022, the number of positive nucleic acid tests and the positive rate reported by various provinces have shown a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The number of positive cases reached a peak on December 22 (6.94 million) and then gradually declined, dropping to a minimum of 15,000 on January 23, 2023; the test positivity rate reached a peak on December 25 (29.2%) and then gradually declined, falling to 5.5% on January 23.

On January 27, Professor Fang Bangjiang, director of the Institute of Critical Care Medicine at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said, "The spread of the new coronavirus has gradually weakened, not because the virus itself has undergone major changes, but because society has maintained a certain low level of transmission, which has consolidated the immune barrier. In addition, the vast majority of people have been infected, forming herd immunity, and the virus has become less likely to spread."

"The epidemic has developed cyclically from peak to trough and then from trough to peak, which is in line with the law of virus development." Qiao Shubin, director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at the Beijing Fengtai District Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, also said that although there will be no more peaks in the short term, it does not mean that the new coronavirus will disappear. Under the current circumstances, it is still necessary to do a good job of personal protection .
