Counterpoint Research: US mobile phone market shipments fell 17% year-on-year in Q1 2023

According to a report released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, U.S. shipments in the first quarter of 2023 fell 17% year-on-year, and the uncertain economic outlook forced consumers to postpone purchasing new devices.

The attached report information is as follows:

• Apple's iPhone shipment share increased from 49% in the first quarter of 2022 to 53%.

• Samsung's market share remained unchanged at 27%.

• Motorola's market share fell 2 percentage points, from 10% to 8%.

• TCL's market share fell by 1 percentage point, from 3% to 2%.

• Google Pixel smartphones maintained 2%.

• Other brands fell 1 percentage point, from 9% to 8%.

Research analyst Matthew Orf commented:

Inflation begins to impact the U.S. smartphone market in the second half of 2022, particularly at the lower end of the market where consumers have less disposable income and are more sensitive to price changes. Continued inflation and an uncertain economic outlook are causing consumers to delay purchasing new devices, leading to lower upgrade rates and fewer device sales, especially in the prepaid segment.
