Stack Overflow: Cloud programmers earn the most

Stack Overflow: Cloud programmers earn the most

199IT original compilation

At the beginning of the new year, Stack Overflow conducted a survey on the technologies and programming languages used by programmers around the world, their income, technical environment, and technical combinations.

Geographical distribution of all respondents

Key findings of the survey:

Most used technologies in 2016

Programmers using JavaScript surpass those using any other programming language, and with the emergence of Node and Angular, PHP is no longer the most popular technology.

The most popular technologies currently in use

The technology you most want to use in the future

Delphi is the most commonly used writing language, and Typescript is the writing language that programmers most want to use.

The most feared technology

The technology you most want to get involved in

For the second year in a row, Rust, Swift, and Go are the most popular programming languages. VB is the technology that programmers fear the most, and programmers will not miss it even if it disappears. Programmers who are not currently developing Android, Node, and Angular hope to get involved in the future.

Popular technologies on Stack Overflow

About 40 million people visit Stack Overflow every month. Data shows that in June 2015, JavaScript surpassed Java to become the most popular tag on Stack Overflow; in December, Swift surpassed Objective-C.

Newer web development technologies like React, Node.js, and AngularJS are growing in usage, as is Swift, which is eating into Objective C's market share. Interest in CoffeeScript, Haskell, and Windows Phone is declining. While surveys show that many programmers want to move away from Visual Basic and WordPress, these technologies aren't going away anytime soon.

Cloud programmers are making a killing, with Spark, Scala, Cassandra, and F# all among the highest-paying technologies.

Overall, programmers who know JavaScript and develop for the cloud, or use React or Redis, earn more; front-end programmers who use JavaScript and React, Node, or Angular earn more; programmers with a math background (including data science and machine learning) and who know Scala, Spark, or Hadoop earn more than their peers; and programmers who target iOS systems earn an average of $10,000 more than Android programmers.

The average programmer uses 4 to 5 programming languages, frameworks, and technologies. The most common two-technology combination is JavaScript and SQL. The most common three-technology combination is JavaScript, PHP, and SQL.

Data Science

There are more full-stack programmers using PHP than back-end programmers; JavaScript is clearly the most popular back-end technology, which means that most back-end programmers are full-stack programmers. The survey shows that 60% of professional programmers are engaged in full-stack development; 63% of data scientists use Python; 44% use R; 27% use both.

Development Environment

On average, each programmer uses 2 to 3 development environments, and the most popular writing development environments are WebStorm (1.6%), brackets (.8%), QT Creator (.7%) and Delphi (.4%).

Full Stack

Data Scientist

student

Data scientists most commonly use Vim and Notepad++; full-stack programmers most commonly use Visual Studio and Sublime; students most commonly use Notepad++ and Visual Studio.

2016 Programmers Target PC Operating Systems

Last year, Mac was the second most used operating system by programmers, only behind Linuxes; this year, this trend is even clearer. If this trend continues, less than 50% of programmers will use Windows next year.

When it comes to Linuxes, Ubuntu is the most popular (12.3%), while Fedora, Mint, and Debian account for 1.4%, 1.7%, and 1.9% respectively.
