Flurry: Uncovering the most engaged app categories

Flurry's recent report shows that the most engaged apps are not games, banking clients, or social networks, but simple utilities, news, weather, etc. that users log in frequently. These apps have a large number of users and tend to return inertia, and some even use them again three months after abandoning the app.
Flurry tracks the 90-day user retention rate of the most popular apps, combining user retention rate with user usage frequency.
Flurry found that weather apps are the app category with the highest user retention rate, with 73% of users still opening the app 30 days after installation, 63% of users opening the app 60 days after installation, and 55% of users opening the app 90 days after installation.
Interestingly, the weather apps with the highest user retention rates are not the most frequently used ones, with an average of 3.7 unique visits per week.

The most frequently used apps are music, messaging, and social games, but only messaging apps have a 30-day user retention rate of around 50%. Flurry found that 62% of users will open messaging apps one month after installation, but the 30-day user opening rates of social games and music apps are 47% and 39%, respectively.

Overall, Flurry recommends that developers consider developing apps with high retention rates that can be monetized through subscriptions and advertising, while apps with one-time paid downloads have a higher risk of user churn.
Flurry also found that in-app purchases are an effective way to monetize, especially for apps that users use frequently, without having to worry too much about retention rates for such apps.
