eMarketer: American college students also socialize and study while watching TV

Despite the lack of resources, American college students have a wide variety of connected devices. According to the report "College Explorer" conducted by Crux Research, 7/10 college students aged 18-34 owned smartphones in 2013, an increase of 14 percentage points from 2012. Tablets have grown even faster, with a 36% ownership rate among college Internet users, up from 21% in 2012. Laptops are very common, at 85%, down from 2012.

Mobile has a significant impact on college students' screen life. In 2013, the time college students spent using computers and watching TV declined, while the time spent on smartphones and tablets increased significantly.

Although the time college students spend watching TV is decreasing, a considerable number of college students, 60%, still own flat-screen TVs, and watching TV is still the main media consumption for many college students. The average daily TV watching time for college students is still 2.8 hours.

When college students watch TV, two-screen behavior is also very common. The study found that 8/10 college students use two-screen behavior several times a week when watching TV, and only 13% use two-screen behavior less than once a week or not at all.

The most popular second-screen activity for college students while watching TV is Facebook or Twitter, at 63%. Social TV is attractive to TV marketers and advertisers, but it may also divert users' attention away from TV content.

Browsing the web and playing games accounted for 58% and 50% respectively. Of course, students have not been forgotten, and 37% of them read homework or do research while watching TV.

Computers are the second most commonly used screen for college students to watch TV, accounting for 54%, followed by smartphones and tablets, at 36% and 10%, respectively.
