Nielsen: July 2012 US mobile phone market survey: 55.5% of people use smartphones

Well-known data analysis company Nielsen released its July survey data today: 55.5% of all mobile phone users in the United States use smartphones, most of whom are young adults and teenagers. Quoting the content of Nielsen's official blog:

"As mobile phone manufacturers release new mobile phones before the holiday shopping season, Nielsen conducted a quick survey of the current mobile phone market: it was found that in July this year, 55.5% of mobile phone users in the United States used smartphones, a year-on-year increase of 14.5%. This shows that smartphones have gradually replaced feature phones and become the hot cakes in the US mobile phone market.

The rapid growth of smartphones is largely due to the support of young people. Among all smartphone users in the United States, 74% are between the ages of 25 and 34, a proportion that was only 59% in July last year. Interestingly, teenagers aged 13 to 17 form the strongest "support group" for smartphones: 58% of American teenagers use smartphones, and 36% of them said they bought their smartphones a year ago.

In terms of market share of smartphone operating systems in the United States, Android still holds the top spot (51.9%), but iOS has increased its share by 1.3 percentage points compared to the most recent survey results (from 33% to 34.3%).

Nielsen's monthly survey targets 2,000 mobile phone users who have signed contracts with telecommunications companies, ranging in age from 13 years old and up.
