Smartphones became the mainstream among US users in 2012. In June 2012, 47% of mobile phone users used smartphones, and more than 45 million smartphone users used shopping e-commerce apps, with an average of 17 times of use of shopping apps that month. Brands that are popular for online shopping also maintain their lead in the most frequently used shopping apps. In June, eBay and Amazon had the highest app usage, attracting 13 million and 12 million users, respectively. Traditional retailers such as Target and Walgreens attract a large number of sophisticated shoppers who are looking for the best deals. Daily deal sites like Groupon and LivingSocial have attracted more than 10 million U.S. users to their apps. As more Americans use smartphones to assist with shopping or purchase directly through apps, retailers should consider personalizing their offers to meet the unique needs of each user.
