An 18-year-old boy was preparing for myopia surgery and found a retinal tear

Yang Yang (pseudonym) originally thought that he could stop wearing glasses after the college entrance examination. However, he did not expect that a retinal tear was found during the preoperative examination and he could not undergo surgery for the time being.

Patients who came to the hospital to consult about myopia surgery during the summer vacation

Yang Yang, 18 years old this year, has been wearing glasses for more than 7 years. He wanted to have myopia surgery, so he came to the Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital with his parents for treatment.

After examination, Yang Yang's eyes were found to be myopic with 650 degrees. During the fundus examination, Zhang Qingsong, a member of the Refractive Subcommittee of the Ophthalmology Committee of the China Association of Non-Public Medical Institutions and director of the Refractive Department, found that Yang Yang had a retinal tear and needed fundus laser treatment, otherwise he might suffer from retinal detachment and blindness.

"The child's eyes don't feel any discomfort, so how come there is a problem with the fundus?" Yang Yang and his parents were very surprised when they heard the doctor's diagnosis.

Director Zhang Qingsong explained that for patients with high myopia (refractive error of more than 600 degrees), the axial length of the eye becomes longer, the structure of the patient's eyeball changes, and the retinal area of the fundus continues to stretch, which can easily cause lesions in the retina, macula, and vitreous body.

He reminded that if you have high myopia and want to have myopia surgery, you must be screened before the surgery. "We often receive patients who come for myopia surgery, and during the examination, we find that they have other eye diseases, such as glaucoma, retinal tears, etc. Many people do not meet the surgical indicators and need to be treated for other eye diseases first."

Currently, Yang Yang is undergoing retinal laser treatment, and surgical treatment will be arranged later depending on his recovery.

"Many people mistakenly believe that after myopia surgery, they can see clearly and avoid these fundus problems." Director Zhang Qingsong emphasized that myopia surgery itself only changes the refractive power of the eyeball, and does not change the potential risk of fundus lesions caused by myopia. For people with high myopia of more than 600 degrees, whether they have undergone myopia surgery or not, it is very necessary to check the fundus every six months to one year.
