Is it good for the elderly to walk with their hands behind their backs? Keeping your chest and head high has many benefits and is more beneficial to your health

Correcting a posture cured an elderly person's chest tightness and dizziness. An elderly friend went to the hospital for treatment. He always felt chest tightness and dizziness. He was worried that he had cardiovascular disease, but after various examinations, he found that except for a slightly high blood pressure, there was no other problem.

But he still said he was not feeling well. Later, the doctor saw him walking into the clinic with his hands behind his back and his back bent, so he told him that he could get better if he walked with his chest held high and his head held high. The old man left with doubts, but when he went for a follow-up visit a few days later, his mental state was much better, and he also said that his chest tightness and dizziness symptoms had greatly improved.

1. Changing walking posture is healthier Why can changing walking posture cure diseases? The doctor explained that the old man was not ill at all, but was too suspicious and nervous, which led to neurosis. This was a kind of "heart disease", so it needed "heart medicine" to cure. And his walking posture was indeed problematic, which would aggravate the symptoms.

When the elderly usually walk, they are used to putting their hands behind their backs, lowering their heads, and hunching their chests, which will cause hunchbacks, resulting in a smaller chest cavity volume and affecting the lung's ventilation function. A person's lung capacity when hunched over will decrease by 20% compared to when they hold their heads and chests high. Therefore, after correcting the elderly's walking posture, the oxygen supply capacity is improved, the cardiopulmonary function is enhanced, and the symptoms of neurosis are alleviated.

Second, it is unhealthy for the elderly to walk with their hands behind their backs. Many elderly people are like that old man. When they walk, they are used to leaning forward with their hands behind their backs. This is a habit caused by aging. When you are old, your muscles will atrophy and your strength will decrease, which will make you tend to take a labor-saving posture to carry out activities.

Therefore, when walking, the elderly tend to lean forward and put their hands behind their backs to lower the body's center of gravity and slow down their walking speed. Lowering the center of gravity will make walking more stable, and after putting their hands behind their backs, their arms will not swing, which will save energy and make them feel more comfortable. However, this is not a healthy posture. As Huazi said before, this posture will cause hunchbacks, which is energy-saving at the expense of one's cardiopulmonary function.

3. Elderly people should hold their heads high and their chests high When Huazi was in primary school, his teacher often said, "Stand like a pine tree, sit like a bell, hold your head high and your chest high." In fact, this is not only required for primary school students, but also for the elderly. Walking with your chest high and your head high can increase cardiopulmonary function and increase the body's oxygen supply. It can not only prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, but also keep your body young.

Pay attention to your sitting posture. When reading, watching TV, or playing with your phone, it is best to sit on a chair with good support for your neck, waist, and back. Do not lower your head, lie sideways, or lean on a sofa, bed, or other soft, insufficiently supported place for a long time. Get up and move around for a few minutes every 40 minutes. If you sit still for a long time, it may induce lower extremity venous thrombosis, which may lead to pulmonary embolism.

The mattress should not be too soft, it needs to be hard enough to protect the spine from deformation. You can do a simple exercise every day to prevent hunchback, which is to stand against the wall for 10 minutes. The back of the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels should be close to the wall. You should also maintain 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every day. When the weather is good, try to do it outdoors.

The elderly have increased bone loss and may develop osteoporosis, so they should pay attention to calcium supplementation. They can eat dairy products, beans, seafood and other foods rich in calcium on a daily basis, and increase the time of sun exposure so that the skin can synthesize vitamin D under the sun, promote calcium absorption, and maintain strong bones.

In summary, the elderly should pay attention to their posture in life. Whether walking, sitting or standing, they should keep their chest and head up to avoid hunching over, increase chest volume and promote cardiopulmonary capacity. This will not only reduce the incidence of diseases, but also make them younger. I am pharmacist Huazi. Welcome to follow me and share more health knowledge.
