Why doesn't the grape vine bear fruit after several years? When should I apply the base fertilizer to the grape vine?

Grapevines are vines that can produce grapes. Grapevines can be divided into wine grapes and fruit grapes according to the purpose of the fruits they produce. Grapevines generally produce fruits every year after being planted for two or three years. So why do grapevines not produce fruits after being planted for several years? When is the best time to apply basal fertilizer to grapevines?

Why don't the grape vines bear fruit for several years?

Grapes are perennial vines. Vines can grow for many years, depending on whether you want fruit grapes or wine grapes. Fruit grapes have a shorter lifespan than wine grapes. Generally speaking, the quality of wine grapes is not very good within a few years. If you want to reach a quality in about 10 years, the fruiting period can reach more than 40 years. Over time, the grapevine will produce perfect grapes.

Grapevines have not produced grapes for several years because of improper management methods, mainly due to untimely pest and disease control, which leads to early leaf drop (abnormal leaf drop), insufficient nutrient storage in the tree, and poor flower bud differentiation. Countermeasures and suggestions: Even if grapes have not been produced, management should be strengthened (fertilization, watering, pruning, pest and disease control, nothing can be missed), protect the leaves, let them fall normally (leaf drop is best after mid-November), improve the tree's nutritional level, and promote flower bud differentiation.

When to apply basal fertilizer to grapevines

Base fertilizer is the most important fertilizer application in a year. This fertilizer application has a significant impact on the growth of grapes throughout the year. Fertilization is generally carried out in late autumn, before the grape plants enter dormancy. It is mainly organic fertilizer, combined with phosphorus and calcium fertilizers.

After decomposing in the soil in winter, organic fertilizer can meet the needs of plant growth in the second year and also help the regeneration of broken roots in the current year. In the case of dense planting in protected areas, furrow application is often used. The amount of organic fertilizer applied is 3,000 to 4,000 kilograms per 666.7 square meters, combined with 1.5 to 2.0 kilograms of phosphorus and calcium fertilizers.

When is the best time to fertilize grapevines?

Generally, it is determined according to the needs during the growing season. In Beijing, topdressing is generally done 3 to 4 times a year, mainly with quick-acting fertilizers.

The first topdressing is carried out before budding, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer; the second topdressing can be carried out after fruit setting; the third topdressing is carried out when the fruit begins to color, mainly with potassium fertilizer; the fourth topdressing is carried out after harvest, mainly with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

The vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise stretch over 25 km long and 7 km wide, between the Côte de Beaune in the north and the Mâconnais mountains in the south. Here, hills cut through the flat center, and the vineyard plots are located on the southeast-facing slopes. For a thousand years, the vines have taken root in soils similar to those of the Côte de Beaune. With hot summers and dry autumns, the grapes ripen quickly.
