Why does the dog not defecate? How to make the dog go to the toilet at a fixed place

For people who have pet dogs at home, it is important to cultivate good defecation habits for the dogs, so that it is convenient to clean and it can also help train the dogs. So how do you get your dog to go to the toilet at a fixed place?

Why do dogs not defecate?

If you do not have a bowel movement for more than two days, it means that your bowel movement is abnormal. Generally, there are three reasons.

1. Physiological problems

For example, if a dog does not like to drink water or drinks less water, is old, is in an unfamiliar environment, is frightened or other stressful situations, or is in a bad mood due to lack of companionship from the owner, these will all affect the dog's defecation.

2. Pathological problems

For example, intestinal foreign objects, intestinal diseases that lead to slower gastrointestinal motility, anal gland inflammation, etc. can cause dogs to become constipated or have less bowel movements.

3. Feeding issues

Improper feeding by the owner is the most common cause of dog constipation. For example, the owner often feeds hard food, fails to control the feeding amount, the dog eats fast and without restraint, and feeds high-salt food, etc., which can directly or indirectly lead to dog constipation.

How to get your dog to go to the toilet

Choose a fixed defecation location

Your dog often urinates at point A, and you want it to urinate at point B, then put a piece of newspaper on point A to collect the urine smell.

Dogs also like to find corners that are not visible to others when defecating, so the ideal place for you to let it defecate should be remote, and put a newspaper or diaper there to show that it has defecated there in the past.

Warm-up exercises before defecation

Dogs will have some specific warm-up movements before defecation, and different dogs will have different behaviors. If you find that your dog has signs of defecation, such as restlessness, circling, sniffing, squatting, etc., immediately put down the work you are doing, carry it to the prepared newspaper or urine pad, and let it defecate.

Training requires patience

Find the right opportunity. The dog will want to defecate about half an hour after eating. This is a good opportunity for training. After 5 to 7 days of training, the dog will take the initiative to go to the toilet or a fixed place to defecate.

Fancy Rewards

After you have mastered the dog's movements before defecation, when these signs appear, take it to a designated place to defecate immediately, and give it a reward immediately after it has finished defecating.

Praise it and caress it, play games with it, play with it, and reward it with delicious food. There are many ways to do this, as long as it lets it know that you are satisfied with it.

Things to pay attention to when training your dog to defecate

The location should be fixed

A fixed defecation site helps dogs form conditioned reflexes. If it is changed frequently, it will give dogs the illusion that they can defecate anywhere, and training will become meaningless.

Follow your dog’s lifestyle

To train your puppy, you need to understand his/her daily routine and pay attention to his/her health, diet, etc. Dogs are more likely to defecate 0.5~1 hour after eating and 0.5~1 hour before and after sleeping. You need to pay special attention to these time periods!

Feeding time should be fixed

Regular defecation training must ensure regular feeding. If the dog has gastrointestinal problems, it should be treated first, and then training can be carried out after the dog recovers.

Keep quiet during bowel movements

When you find your dog defecating, you must remain quiet and don't shout, otherwise it will scare the dog and affect training.
