What is the best speed for manual transmission? Why do we need to change gears when driving?

The difference between manual and automatic transmission is that one requires manual gear shifting, while the other can shift gears automatically without manual effort. So how do you control the timing of manual gear shifting? Should you look at the engine speed or the vehicle speed?

What is the best speed for manual gear shifting?

Manual transmission generally shifts gears according to the engine speed, and the timing of shifting gears is generally controlled within 2000-2500 rpm.

If you want the car to be more powerful and accelerate faster, you can also delay the timing of shifting gears and increase the engine speed to 3000-5000 to shift gears. However, this will result in poor fuel economy and high fuel consumption. It is best to control the speed at around 2000 rpm for economical driving.

Secondly, you can also shift gears according to the driving speed. Generally, start in 1st gear, shift to 2nd gear at around 18 mph, 3rd gear at around 30 mph, 4th gear at around 45 mph, and 5th gear at around 60 mph.

In addition, the timing of shifting gears is related to vehicle load and road conditions. For example, when cruising in high gear and need to overtake and accelerate quickly, you will find that even if you step on the accelerator into the tank, the car will not speed up because the transmission ratio is too small and the engine speed is too low. At this time, the resistance to be overcome in order to accelerate is large. If you want good acceleration performance, you can only downshift to achieve better acceleration.

If you become an experienced driver or are familiar with the car, you will basically make a comprehensive judgment on the timing of shifting gears based on the sound of the engine, the vibration of the car body, the feeling of acceleration, the sensitivity of the throttle response, etc. In other words, you shift gears based on your feeling, and there is no need to look at the speed or speedometer at all.

Why do you need to change gears when driving?

This question is for traditional fuel engines.

Because of the characteristics of traditional fuel engines (gasoline engines, diesel engines) (high speed and low torque), they cannot adapt well to the operation on various road surfaces (different road surfaces require the characteristics of engines to be low speed and high torque). Therefore, great automotive engineers use gears to change the original characteristics of fuel engines to adapt to the driving conditions of various road surfaces.

If you use the 1st gear and the accelerator directly, no matter how hard you step on the accelerator, you will find that the car's speed is not too high, but the engine speed varies greatly, which is obviously not suitable for the operation of the car as a high-efficiency means of transportation. Therefore, you need to shift gears to reduce the engine speed and increase the speed.

For pure electric vehicles (new energy vehicles), due to the characteristics of the electric motor (a large part of its working range is constant power and constant torque output, and this part of the range is sufficient to meet the characteristics required on daily roads), pure electric vehicles all use a single-speed gearbox (mainly to meet the three operating conditions of the vehicle being stationary, moving forward, and moving backward).

There are several types of automatic transmissions

1. Basic AT gearbox.

There is no clutch, but there are specific gear numbers, and the appropriate gear is automatically selected according to vehicle speed and throttle usage.

2. Add AMT transmission with manual mode.

Based on AT, the ability to manually control the gear position is added when forced gear shifting is required or when the vehicle needs to be pushed to its limit. However, the difference between AMT and manual transmission is that there is no clutch either.

3.CVT continuously variable transmission.

The gear ratio can be selected within the hardware range without a fixed gear ratio. There is no gear shifting setback, and when accelerating, you can't see the gear shifting process, you can only see the tachometer fixed at a certain value and then the vehicle speed increases.
