Can I breastfeed while lying down?

Babies who grow up drinking breast milk will have stronger resistance and immunity, which will reduce the probability of getting sick during their growth. Breastfeeding a baby is not an easy task. Some babies are quite greedy and will go hungry when breastfed, which makes it very difficult for the mother. So is it okay to breastfeed while lying down?

Many mothers like to breastfeed their babies while lying down, especially at night when this position is more convenient. However, feeding the baby while lying down can easily cause the baby to spit up. Because the stomach of a newborn baby is different from that of an adult. The baby's stomach is level and its passages are looser than those of adults. If the mother lies down to breastfeed the baby, some air will enter the baby's stomach, which can easily cause the baby to vomit. When the abdominal distension is severe, vomiting milk can easily be sucked back into the bronchi and cause suffocation.

Breastfeeding while lying down will not only cause the baby to vomit, but also make the baby more likely to get otitis media, because the baby's Eustachian tube will be relatively flat and wide. If mothers often feed their babies while lying down, the milk will easily flow into the baby's middle ear through the Eustachian tube, causing infection and otitis media. Otitis media has a great impact on babies and can even cause deafness in severe cases.

Finally, if the baby lies flat for a long time to feed, the baby's lower jaw will be protruded too much for a long time, which will affect the growth of the baby's face. Therefore, it is not recommended for parents to lie flat for a long time to breastfeed the baby.

What is the correct posture for exclusive breastfeeding?

1. Hold the baby's legs under the armpits with your upper limbs as if you were holding a basketball. The baby's upper body should be in a semi-lying position facing the mother's chest. Use a pillow to raise the baby to the nipple, and then push the breast forward.

2. Hold the baby with your arms and let the baby's head rest in the mother's elbow. , the mother's upper arm holds the baby's back and the palm of her hand holds the baby's butt.

3. The mother sleeps on her side, puts a pillow under her head, turns the baby's body back to the side, and puts a small pillow on the baby's back to make the baby's head, neck and body in a straight line.
