What medicine should I take for menstrual pain?

Women have their periods every month, and this phase is when women are most vulnerable. Women at this stage should pay attention to keeping warm and dealing with their periods correctly. It is a normal physiological phenomenon for women to experience abdominal pain during menstruation. It is caused by uterine contraction. Women can use painkillers to relieve dysmenorrhea, but they cannot take painkillers frequently, as this will cause drug resistance. For specific drugs, please read below.

What medicine can relieve the pain when I have menstrual cramps?

1. Ovulation-inhibiting drugs: by inhibiting the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis, inhibiting ovulation, inhibiting endometrial growth, and reducing prostaglandin and vasopressin levels, the degree of dysmenorrhea is relieved. The efficacy of oral contraceptives can reach over 90%. Mainly suitable for patients who require contraception.

2. Drugs that inhibit uterine contraction:

① Prostaglandin synthase inhibitors: By inhibiting the activity of prostaglandin synthase, reducing prostaglandin production, preventing excessive uterine contractions and spasms, thereby alleviating or eliminating dysmenorrhea. The efficacy of this type of drug treatment can reach 80%. It is best to start taking the medicine as soon as menstruation occurs, and take it for 2-3 days in a row. Commonly used drugs include ibuprofen, ketoprofen, meclofenamic acid, diclofenac, mefenamic acid, and naproxen. Ibuprofen 200-400 mg, 3-4 times a day; or ketoprofen 50 mg, 3 times a day.

② Calcium antagonists: They can interfere with the passage of calcium ions through cell membranes and prevent the release of calcium ions from cells, thereby reducing the calcium ion concentration around uterine muscle cells and weakening uterine contractions. The commonly used dosage is 10 mg of nifedipine, 3 times a day, taken sublingually when pain occurs. The main side effects are decreased blood pressure, tachycardia, vasodilatory headache and facial flushing.

How to treat dysmenorrhea

1. Keep warm. Many female friends who suffer from dysmenorrhea have a cold uterus, so they should pay special attention to keeping warm in normal times. When sitting in an air-conditioned room in summer, put on a long-sleeved jacket to protect your body from the cold.

2. Eat less raw and cold food. Just like the stomach and intestines are afraid of cold, eating cold drinks frequently can also cause damage to the uterus, so don't be too greedy for ice cream or cold drinks. Cold foods, such as bitter melon, watermelon, purslane, etc., can reduce internal heat, clear away heat and detoxify for people with symptoms of internal heat. However, female friends before and after menstruation should try to eat less during this special period to avoid menstrual blood stasis in the body and cause unbearable pain.

3. Eat more warm foods. The most commonly used method is to drink brown sugar ginger tea before and after menstruation. After drinking it, not only does your whole body feel comfortable, but your uterus is also warmed, which is conducive to the smooth flow of menstrual blood.

4. Pay attention to blood supplement. The loss of menstrual blood can cause anemia in some women, among which iron deficiency anemia is the most common. Therefore, before the menstrual period comes, eat more foods rich in iron, such as animal liver, cherries, and oysters. Iron is the main component of human hemoglobin. Supplementing an appropriate amount of iron helps promote blood production and avoid symptoms of anemia during menstruation.

5. Pay attention to physical exercise at ordinary times, including before and after menstruation. The idea that exercise may aggravate dysmenorrhea symptoms is wrong. On the contrary, resting quietly may be detrimental to the discharge of menstrual blood. You should do some appropriate exercise before and during your period. Just walk more, with moderate intensity, and it will keep your blood flowing smoothly.

6. If the pain is really severe, you can use antispasmodic and analgesic drugs appropriately. Don't force yourself to endure the pain. In fact, this is not good for your body and will seriously affect the quality of your life and work.

7. In addition to physical conditioning, you should also pay attention to psychological adjustment. Excessive mental stress, anxiety and irritability are factors that can easily induce or aggravate dysmenorrhea. We must correctly understand the causes of dysmenorrhea and learn to adjust our emotions.

8. If you have had other gynecological diseases before, it is recommended to go to a regular hospital for a gynecological examination to rule out the onset of the disease and then receive relevant targeted treatment.
