What causes hair loss after giving birth?

After giving birth, the mother's body will undergo many changes, among which body shape change is a change that many mothers will face. Some mothers also experience hair loss, which is an important factor leading to an increasing number of mothers suffering from postpartum depression. Moreover, most women cannot accept the hair loss after giving birth, so why do hair loss problems occur after giving birth?

1. Due to special physiological conditions

Hair, like other tissues, undergoes metabolism. Generally speaking, all hair needs to be replaced every 5 years, but because hair is usually renewed in stages and batches, it is not easy for people to notice. During pregnancy, since the pregnant mother secretes more estrogen than usual, the lifespan of the hair is extended, the rate of hair loss slows down, and a large amount of hair "serves overdue". After childbirth, the estrogen level in the body returns to normal, and those "overserved" hairs "retire" one after another, resulting in postpartum hair loss.

2. Influenced by mental factors

Psychological factors are one of the reasons why women lose a lot of hair after giving birth. Many new mothers are always in a state of tension and anxiety or are exposed to negative mental stimulation, which can cause dysfunction of the cerebral cortex and lead to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. In this way, the nerves controlling the blood vessels in the scalp will also be dysfunctional, reducing the blood supply to the scalp, causing malnutrition and hair loss. Losing a lot of hair will lead to more tension and anxiety, aggravating hair loss, which will create a vicious cycle in the long run.

3. Unbalanced nutrition

Since pregnancy and childbirth are extremely exhausting processes for women, postpartum body recovery and baby feeding require a lot of nutritional supplements. If the mother has poor digestion and absorption function, her diet is too monotonous, or she is picky about food, it is easy for her to suffer from nutritional deficiencies or unbalanced nutrition, resulting in insufficient supply of protein, vitamins or minerals in the body, thus affecting hair growth and metabolism.

4. Improper head care

Some mothers are influenced by local old customs and dare not wash or comb their hair during the confinement period. These bad customs will cause the sebum secretions and dust on the scalp to mix and accumulate, which not only affects the blood supply to the head, but also easily causes folliculitis or scalp infection, thereby increasing the chance of hair loss.
