Menstrual period is black

Menstrual period is black

During menstruation, the blood will normally be a little darker red, mainly because the amount of blood discharged during menstruation is relatively large, so the blood will look dark red. However, turning black may be caused by symptoms of qi stagnation and blood stasis, and poor menstrual circulation or blood clots will cause the blood to turn black. At this time, women will have less menstrual flow or delayed menstruation. Everyone should pay attention to the causes of black menstrual blood.

Why is menstruation black?

Black menstruation can be divided into two types: Qi stagnation and blood stasis type and blood cold type. Different dietary therapy methods can be selected according to different syndromes:

1. Qi stagnation and blood stasis type: either first or later, the amount is uncertain

Symptoms include early or late menstruation, irregular flow, stiff menstruation, dark purple blood with clots, and pain is relieved when the clots are discharged. Some people experience abdominal distension and pain before or during the early stages of menstruation and refuse to have their abdomen massaged. Some people even suffer from amenorrhea, metrorrhagia, and infertility. It is often accompanied by premenstrual breast pain, chest and flank discomfort, lower abdominal distension or stabbing pain (the pain location is fixed), depression or irritability, dark red tongue, thin white fur, and wiry pulse.

2. Cold blood type: delayed menstruation and scanty menstruation

Symptoms include: (1) For those with excess cold, menstruation is delayed, the amount of menstruation is scanty and clotty, and the color of menstruation is dark. Cold pain in the lower abdomen before or during menstruation can be relieved by warming up. Most women have a history of wading in the rain, catching a cold, or eating raw or cold food during menstruation. The tongue is pale and dark, the tongue coating is thin white, and the pulse is tight. (2) Those with deficiency and cold (uterine cold) have delayed menstruation, less menstruation, lighter color, loose menstruation without clots, infertility after a long marriage or prone to miscarriage. Accompanied by cold limbs, cold pain and discomfort in the lower abdomen or waist; indigestion, poor appetite and fatigue, loose stools; or dizziness, tinnitus, dark circles under the eyes or around the lips, soreness in the waist and knees, low libido, nocturia or clear and long urination, etc. The tongue is pale red, the coating is thin white, and the pulse is deep, thready and weak.

How to regulate

After figuring out why menstruation is black, you should start to regulate it. When the menstrual blood is black, you should keep a good mood, eat a light diet, keep warm, develop a good work and rest schedule, try to go to bed before 11 pm and get up at 7 am. Don't go on a diet blindly to lose weight, and it's best not to take diet pills, otherwise it will lead to irregular menstruation or even amenorrhea. Dietary do’s and don’ts are also key factors in regulating dark menstruation. It should be based on personal constitution. Mainly, avoid eating cool foods such as pears, kelp, etc., avoid eating spicy foods such as prickly ash and pepper, avoid eating too salty food, and avoid drinking strong tea or coffee. After menstruation, the main focus is on nourishing yin, tonifying the kidney and strengthening the spleen, and appropriate use of lily, ophiopogon, julibrissin, floating wheat, amomum, etc. and lean meat stewed with food therapy. People with excessive cold should eat less raw and cold food and pay attention to keeping warm. You can take brown sugar ginger juice when your menstrual flow is too small. If the menstrual blood is black and accompanied by a long period and heavy menstrual flow, in addition to general hemostatic measures, hormones or curettage may be used to stop the bleeding, or oral blood-enriching drugs or infusion treatment may be used as appropriate.
