Can a mother breastfeed when she has a high fever?

Many factors will affect the normal breastfeeding status of the mother. At the same time, there are many factors that affect the content of breast milk. Among them, the mother's physical health has a decisive influence on the quality of breast milk. However, the bodies of mothers during breastfeeding are relatively fragile, and it is inevitable to catch a cold or other illness at this time. There are even some mothers who have a severe cold and a high fever. Can they continue to breastfeed during a high fever?

Can the child be breastfed if the mother has a fever?

It depends on the severity of the fever. A mild fever does not affect breastfeeding. Babies can obtain antibodies from their mother's breast milk, so it is even more important to insist on breastfeeding. When taking care of your baby, you should wash your hands frequently and wear a mask to avoid contact of saliva with your baby.

However, when the mother has a severe cold and fever, try to avoid breastfeeding, because the breast milk contains a higher number of cold viruses, which can easily be transmitted to the baby.

In addition, mom doesn’t have to endure a cold or fever. She can be cured quickly without taking any medicine. If you take good precautions in the future, you will basically not catch a cold again.

How to relieve fever during breastfeeding

If a breastfeeding mother has a fever (measured body temperature is between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius), she should rest in bed at home and ensure adequate sleep to facilitate physical recovery; eat more nutritious liquids such as milk, porridge, noodles, etc., eat small meals frequently, and avoid eating eggs when having a high fever; at the same time, drink plenty of warm boiled water, with a daily drinking water intake of no less than 500 ml.

Don't reduce fever as soon as you have a fever, because a certain degree of fever (body temperature below 38.5℃) has a protective effect on the body. Breastfeeding can be suspended for 1 to 2 days during a high fever. During the period of cessation of feeding, breast milk should be expressed frequently to ensure that breastfeeding can be continued in the future. The mother should drink plenty of water, fresh juice and eat light and easily digestible food.

The above article introduces the question of whether the child can eat breast milk when the mother has a fever. Breast milk is the first food for newborns. It is recommended that mothers feed their babies more breast milk under the condition of good health. If the mother has a fever, she should feed the baby with formula milk appropriately under the advice of a doctor, so as not to affect the baby's physical development.
