Why do patients with polycystic ovary take birth control pills?

Due to the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian functional diet therapy, patients with polycystic ovary syndrome suffer from endocrine disorders and high levels of androgen in the body, resulting in symptoms such as irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, infertility, acne, excessive body hair, and hair loss.

Oral contraceptives such as Diane 35 and Marvelon, whose main ingredients are female hormones such as ethinyl estradiol and cyproterone acetate, can inhibit the synthesis and secretion of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH), reduce the androgen level of the ovaries, and prevent excessive endometrial hyperplasia. At the same time, the estradiol component in oral contraceptives can also promote the liver to produce sex hormone binding protein and reduce free androgens in the blood circulation.

After androgen levels decrease, hormone secretions return to normal, ovulation gradually resumes, and symptoms are alleviated. Therefore, doctors will use birth control pills as one of the medications for the treatment of polycystic ovary.

What should patients pay attention to when taking contraceptive pills?

1. Take medication as directed by your doctor

Contraceptive pills have certain side effects, such as causing weight gain in some patients and possibly aggravating sugar metabolism or lipid metabolism disorders. Therefore, you must strictly follow the doctor's instructions and do not take contraceptive pills on your own.

2. Do not take it for too long

Fertility experts point out that the best clinical use of medication (contraceptives) for women with polycystic ovary is 3 menstrual cycles. The duration should not be too long, and treatment can be intermittent for 3-6 months.

3. Pay attention to your diet

During the period of taking contraceptives for PCOS patients, they should pay attention to a light diet, reduce the intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods, avoid spicy and irritating foods, and actively exercise to control the growth of fat.

4. Prohibited for some groups of people

Due to the side effects of oral contraceptives, they are contraindicated for people with a risk of breast cancer, thrombosis, being overweight (BMI greater than 30), or heavy smokers.
