Three major symptoms of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy

Women may encounter many medical problems during pregnancy. This is closely related to the physical condition of each woman. Because everyone's immunity or the degree to which the body can withstand stress is different, various unexpected disease problems may occur during pregnancy. Hyperthyroidism during pregnancy is a common disease problem, but it is difficult to diagnose. So what are the three main symptoms of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy?

Common clinical symptoms of pregnant women with hyperthyroidism include heat intolerance, sweating, tachycardia, irritability and other high metabolic symptoms. Physical examination will reveal skin flushing, increased skin temperature, moist sweating, shiny and lustrous skin on the hands and face, and occasional red palms and capillary dilation. There will also be symptoms such as insomnia, irritability, and fatigue.

1. Pregnant women with hyperthyroidism will have physiological enlargement of their thyroid gland, which may be 2 to 4 times the normal size. The enlargement may be symmetrical, or one lobe may be slightly larger. The texture of the gland may be soft to tough, and may occasionally be tender. The surface of the gland is smooth, and vibrations may be felt and continuous vascular murmurs may be heard. Patients with hyperthyroidism have thinner and more brittle hair, and may also suffer from hair loss. Patients with transient hyperthyroidism due to vomiting of pregnancy generally have few symptoms. A few patients have symptoms such as palpitations, weight loss, heat intolerance, sweating, etc., but there is no exophthalmos or pretibial myxedema.

2. Eye disease is also a major manifestation of hyperthyroidism. The eyeballs are bright and prominent, with delayed eyelid retraction, especially when the patient looks downward, when the upper eyelid retracts slowly, and a distinct scleral border can be seen between the eyelid margins when looking downward. Severe hyperthyroidism eye disease is rare. Eye symptoms include: eye irritation, photophobia, tearing and eye discomfort. If the disease is serious, the patient may have blurred vision and double vision. After examination, it will be found that the patient is staring, has periorbital edema, conjunctival congestion and edema, incomplete eyelid closure, and some may develop corneal ulcers. In a few cases, the eyeball may be partially dislocated and the optic disc may be edematous.

3. Hyperthyroidism can also lead to personality changes and nervousness, such as irritability, irritability, talkativeness, suspicion, inattention or silence, depression, palpitations (paroxysmal or persistent), fatigue, heat intolerance, weight loss, increased intestinal motility, diarrhea in a few cases, and itchy skin or rash after sun exposure. Due to varying degrees of muscle weakness, the patient needs to use the strength of his hands to stand up when sitting or lying down, and becomes obviously anxious and short of breath when climbing stairs.

4. Pregnant women with hyperthyroidism will also experience changes in the digestive system and metabolism, mainly manifested as fear of heat, weight loss, and good appetite. Even if they eat more, their weight will not increase with the increase in gestational age. Some pregnant women with the disease will even experience weight loss. The frequency of bowel movements increases and the stools become loose and soft.
