What to do if your period is prolonged after wearing the ring

The ring is placed in the uterus, and the contraceptive effect is achieved through the reaction of local tissues to the ring. The efficacy is partial. It is a safe, effective, economical and reversible contraceptive method. It is a common long-term contraceptive measure for women of childbearing age in my country. So what should I do if my menstrual period lasts for a long time after wearing an IUD?

The IUD has a certain validity period, and the validity period varies. Most of them are 8 to 10 years, some are longer, and some are shorter.

The doctor will tell you when the IUD is inserted. When the validity period is reached, you need to go to the hospital for inspection and then replace it. If it is not replaced in time after the expiration date, it may affect the effectiveness of contraception, even cause pregnancy with the ring, and cause adverse effects on health.

After the IUD is inserted, most women have a relatively regular menstrual cycle, a relatively normal menstrual flow, and no abdominal pain or heavy bleeding, which shows that they are relatively adapted to the IUD and wearing it for a long time has little impact on the body.

A small number of women experience continuous bleeding after the IUD is inserted, which may even last for more than 20 days, and also have adverse symptoms such as abdominal pain. Their condition does not improve after treatment, which means that the IUD is not suitable for them and they need to go to the hospital for examination and remove the IUD if necessary, and use other contraceptive methods. Continuing to leave it in place will have certain adverse effects on the body.

After menopause, you need to remove the IUD. You can go to the hospital outpatient clinic to have it removed after more than half a year.

There are two main common side effects after inserting an IUD. The first is bleeding. Some women will experience increased menstruation after the ring is inserted. Some people have prolonged menstruation and unclear bleeding, while others have mixed secretions and heavy flow. This is generally caused by the ring irritating the uterine wall, causing chemical changes in the tissue, resulting in local coagulation disorders. Menstrual abnormalities are also related to the material of the ring. Plastic and copper rings have a higher incidence of bleeding, while metal rings have a lower incidence and contain the lowest progesterone content. The second common side effect is pain in the lower limbs or lower back. The contraceptive ring placed in the uterus is a "foreign body" to the uterus, especially when the ring is slightly larger or positioned lower. The uterus contracts in order to clear the "foreign body", causing uterine contraction and pain. The clinical symptoms are lower abdominal pain and back pain. This symptom often occurs in the early stage of IUD insertion. It can be solved symptomatically by going to a regular hospital for examination. The doctor will usually prescribe some blood-activating and analgesic drugs, which will usually heal after a few months. However, if the above two side effects are ineffective after treatment and the symptoms worsen, you may consider removing the IUD.
