What to do if you have toothache during pregnancy

We all know that we cannot use medications during pregnancy, otherwise it will have a certain impact on the baby. However, many people will experience toothache during the pregnancy preparation period. Many people are also worried and dare not use painkillers indiscriminately, fearing that it will have a certain impact on the baby in the future. However, toothache is not a disease, but it can be fatal. So, what should you do if you have toothache during the pregnancy preparation period? Is there any way to relieve it?

As the saying goes, "When you give birth to a baby, you lose a tooth." There are still many people who believe that the fetus absorbs calcium from the mother's teeth during pregnancy, so it is normal for pregnant women to have dental problems. This phenomenon may be common, but common does not mean it should happen.

Statistics show that about half of pregnant women suffer from dental caries. Due to hormonal changes in women during pregnancy, many pregnant women will experience vomiting and acid reflux in the early stages of pregnancy, which will cause changes in the bacterial flora in the mouth - the oral environment becomes more suitable for the development of caries. There are also many pregnant women who experience aggravated early pregnancy reactions when brushing their teeth, and feel nausea, vomiting and uncomfortable, so they just brush their teeth twice a day or simply do not brush their teeth. Coupled with the changes in eating habits during pregnancy, these special situations will "trigger" tooth decay.

Some female friends had tooth decay before they became pregnant, but they did not get checked and treated in time. During pregnancy, due to the influence of various factors, caries becomes more and more serious, developing into acute pulpitis or even apical periodontitis, the pain is unbearable. Many pregnant women are afraid that the treatment process and medication will affect the growth and development of the fetus, so they endure the toothache and dare not take medicine or go to the hospital, allowing the diseased teeth to run rampant. Pregnancy for ten months is already very hard, why should you add so much pain that you shouldn’t have to endure for no reason? Did you know? There are many bacteria hidden in the mouth with caries, and the toxins produced by these bacteria increase the risk of premature babies and low birth weight babies. If the mother has tooth decay, the bacteria in her mouth can be transmitted to the newborn baby through kissing, sharing of tableware, etc.

We recommend that every female friend who is planning to become pregnant should go to the hospital for systematic oral health diagnosis and treatment 6 months in advance: teeth cleaning, removing caries, root canal-treated teeth with hidden dangers, residual roots and crowns, abnormally positioned wisdom teeth, etc. In addition, men’s oral health will affect sperm quality, and prospective fathers should actively undergo oral health checks before “making a baby”. The couple should work together to welcome the arrival of new life with a healthy and fresh oral environment!

Due to the special nature of pregnancy, expectant mothers need to spend more time to maintain oral health.

Basic oral hygiene care. Use fluoride toothpaste and brush your teeth at least twice a day for at least three minutes each time. Pregnant women should keep it up for five minutes. Floss every day, and even better, brush and floss after every meal! If you feel nausea and vomiting when brushing your teeth normally, try switching to a toothpaste with a lighter taste, and you will feel much better. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with baking soda water after each vomiting. This can effectively remove residual stomach acid in the mouth and reduce its corrosion on the teeth. In addition, pregnant women are advised to rinse their mouths with an alcohol-free over-the-counter mouthwash before going to bed every day.
