Pregnancy after ovarian cyst surgery, relevant taboos should be kept in mind

When women develop ovarian cysts, it will have a great impact on normal pregnancy and childbearing. For example, ovarian cysts can cause miscarriage in women, and some can cause infertility in women. Therefore, women need to be particularly cautious in pregnancy and childbearing after developing this disease.

1. Pregnancy with ovarian cysts should be more accurately called ovarian cysts with pregnancy. Generally, there is an ovarian tumor before pregnancy, but it is not known and is only discovered during the examination after pregnancy. Ovarian cysts can be of many types, including single or mixed types, unilateral or bilateral, cystic or solid, benign or malignant, among which cystic cysts are the most common. The most common ones in clinical practice are: lutein cyst, simple ovarian cyst, teratoma, chocolate cyst, serous or mucinous cystadenoma, etc. Since ovarian cysts are outside the uterus, they do not affect fetal development.

2. The anatomical feature of the ovary is that it has a very long pedicle, which is actually formed by ligaments and has a large range of motion in the pelvic cavity. Due to the growth of hair, some chocolate cysts have very thin walls and are easily ruptured by the slightest external force; teratomas contain hair, teeth, and fat in their contents, and their weight is uneven, which makes them prone to pedicle torsion; corpus luteum cysts are related to pregnancy and may gradually disappear as the pregnancy progresses; ovarian cysts can grow very large, and some are even as big as a baby's head.

3. Pregnancy complicated with ovarian cysts can cause many hazards to pregnancy:

(1) In early pregnancy, if the tumor is large or embedded in the pelvic cavity, it can easily cause miscarriage.

(2) During mid-pregnancy, the enlarged uterus lifts the ovarian tumor from the pelvic cavity to the larger abdominal cavity, which can easily cause ovarian cyst pedicle torsion. Or after delivery, the uterus shrinks rapidly, which increases the pelvic cavity space, which can also easily cause ovarian cyst pedicle torsion. Teratomas are particularly prone to pedicle torsion.

(3) During labor, ovarian tumors may block the birth canal and cause obstructive labor, or uterine contractions and the baby's head presentation may compress the tumor and cause rupture and bleeding.

4. From the perspective of prevention, we should pay attention to the following aspects:

(1) Be sure to have a pre-pregnancy check-up to check for any abnormalities in the pelvic organs. Ovarian cysts may be discovered during the check-up. If the diameter of the ovarian cyst is greater than 5 cm, surgery should be performed before pregnancy. Today's surgery is relatively simple, using laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery, which is both simple and causes less damage.

(2) If an ovarian tumor is found, CA-125, CA-199, CEA, and AFP should be checked. These are tumor markers. Their purpose is to distinguish whether the tumor is benign or malignant so that treatment can be started as soon as possible. If the tumor is small and benign, you can get pregnant first.

(3) Generally, there is no feeling when an ovarian tumor occurs. However, if there is abdominal pain on one side, or even accompanied by nausea and vomiting, you should go to the hospital for examination immediately. It may be that the ovarian cyst pedicle has been torsioned, and surgery should be performed immediately. Delayed ovarian necrosis may occur. Another possibility when ovarian cysts cause abdominal pain is rupture and bleeding. You should also go to the hospital immediately to see a doctor for timely treatment.

(4) If you find a tumor in your ovary after you become pregnant, don’t be afraid; just observe closely.
