What does progesterone mean?

Progesterone, also known as progesterone, is a steroid and can be said to be a female hormone. It is a progestin. Many women in early pregnancy do not know what progesterone means. This can be said to be very important during women's pregnancy, and attention should be paid to the changes in the progesterone value.

1. Concept

Progesterone is a steroid also known as progesterone. Progesterone is a female hormone that is involved in the female menstrual cycle in humans and other animals, supporting pregnancy and embryo formation. Progesterone is a gestational hormone and the most important gestational hormone known so far. In non-pregnant women, progesterone is secreted in large quantities by the corpus luteum of the ovary only in the second half of each menstrual cycle. So do the brain, liver, and adrenal glands. Progesterone is of great significance to female pregnancy and affects menstruation by affecting the stimulation of estrogen on the endometrium. In the later stages of menstruation, progesterone promotes the growth of glands in the uterine mucosa and the thickening of the endometrium to prepare for the implantation of the fertilized egg. If the progesterone level is low, menstruation will be delayed.

2. Main Application

It mainly promotes and maintains uterine changes in the early stages of pregnancy and is used to treat habitual abortion, irregular menstruation, etc.

3. Pharmacological effects

It is a natural progesterone secreted by the ovary. It intervenes in the ovulatory menstrual cycle and converts the proliferative endometrium based on the action of estrogen into the secretory endometrium; maintains the continuation of pregnancy; promotes the development of the mammary gland; reduces the excitability of the pregnant uterus and inhibits its activity. Used to treat amenorrhea, functional uterine bleeding, etc., to perform periodic medical curettage.

4. Content in the body

In women, progesterone is present at low concentrations, less than 2 ng/ml, during the period before ovulation in the menstrual cycle. It increases to greater than 5 ng/ml during the luteal phase after ovulation. If pregnancy occurs, concentrations will remain at luteal phase concentrations during early pregnancy. Once progesterone begins to be supplied by the placenta, the concentration increases to 100-200 ng/ml.
