Does obesity affect menstruation?

With the development of economy, people's quality of life has improved. If you eat well and sleep well, you will easily gain weight. Many women like to eat desserts and chocolates, and unknowingly, they gain more and more fat on their bodies. Many obese women have irregular menstruation, which causes many women to have some questions. Medically, women who are too thin are prone to malnutrition, which can cause menstrual disorders or amenorrhea. So, does obesity affect menstruation? An explanation of this issue is given below.

Normal menstruation in women depends on the mutual regulation of the human neuroendocrine system. The changes in estrogen in the human body mainly control the menstrual cycle. Under normal circumstances, the estrogen level in the human body is constantly fluctuating. When the estrogen level decreases, it prompts the body to release more gonadotropin to stimulate the development of follicles; and when the estrogen level rises to a certain level, it promotes ovulation.

When the human body is overweight, too much fat accumulates in the body because fat contains a substance that can be converted into estrogen. The more fat there is, the more estrogen is converted. At this time, the estrogen level continues to be at a high level and cannot drop to a low point. The gonadotropin released by the human body will decrease accordingly, leading to poor development of follicles, which in turn affects the synthesis of estrogen by the follicles, preventing it from reaching a certain high value and affecting ovulation. Without ovulation, there will be no normal menstruation. This is also the reason why many fat people are infertile, and the reason why many fat people suffer from amenorrhea and functional uterine bleeding.

Therefore, too much fat in the human body, that is, being too obese, can cause harm to the body. Does obesity affect menstruation? The answer is: obesity can affect menstruation. Many people say that being fat means being blessed, but this has no scientific basis. From a medical point of view, obesity can cause many diseases. Hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular and heart diseases are all common diseases that obese people are prone to. Therefore, people need to properly control their weight, exercise appropriately, and eat a balanced diet in order to have a healthy body.
