If they are infected with high-risk HPV, will they get cervical cancer? Is a positive high-risk HPV16 serious? I believe that such issues are something that everyone needs to understand. Let's take a look at it below.

Is a positive high-risk HPV16 test serious?

HPV16 positive is a relatively serious condition. If this type of high-risk HPV infection persists, it is likely to cause cervical precancerous lesions and even develop into cervical cancer. The reason why Asian women get cervical cancer is mostly due to persistent infection with HPV16 and HPV18. Therefore, if HPV16 is found to be positive, it is recommended to have a colposcopy 3-7 days after the menstrual period. The purpose is to understand whether the cervical epithelial cells have already become diseased under the infection of high-risk HPV. A puncture biopsy can be taken at the same time as the colposcopy. Pathological diagnosis is the standard in clinical medicine. According to pathological diagnosis, if there is no disease, it is recommended to have regular examinations. If the disease has already occurred, appropriate treatment can be taken according to the severity of the disease, thus avoiding the occurrence of cervical cancer.

How is high-risk HPV infected?

High-risk HPV is mainly transmitted to humans through direct or indirect contact with environmental contaminants or sexual behavior. After the virus invades the body, it stays in the skin and mucous membranes at the infected site and does not cause viremia. Within 1 to 2 months of the onset of infection, the blood produces corresponding antigens to the infectious virus. If a blood test is done at this time, the result will be positive, and the detection rate is around 50-90%. 15 high-risk HPV types, especially types 16 and 18, are the main causes of high-profile cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer. The detection rate of HPV DNA in cancer tissues using nucleic acid hybridization is as high as 60%.
