13-year-old boy tested positive for drugs

A few months ago, a 13-year-old boy named Xiaotian suddenly started talking nonsense. He kept saying that he was controlled by aliens. Then he said that the traffic lights on the road were monitoring him, taxis were following him, and he could hear aliens talking to him. His parents immediately took him to Zhejiang University Jingzhong (Hangzhou Seventh Hospital) for hospitalization. The examination results showed that Xiaotian tested positive for drugs twice in a row.

After asking about his medical history, the doctor learned that Xiaotian had been diagnosed with influenza by the local hospital a week before he was hospitalized due to high fever (39.6℃) and cough. In addition to prescribing medicine to treat influenza, the doctor also prescribed symptomatic antipyretic drugs and cough syrup for Xiaotian to take.

At that time, because the child had a high fever, the anxious mother did not listen carefully to the doctor's instructions (three times a day, 10ml each time), and did not look at the emergency medical records afterwards. As a result, Xiaotian's mother gave Xiaotian the medicine three times a day, 50ml each time.

In 3 days, Xiaotian finished 3 bottles of cough syrup.

Why does cough medicine have a "drug-like" effect when taken?

Doctors say that some cough syrups and cold medicines used in daily life are ephedrine-based compound preparations.

It is understood that ephedrine can shrink blood vessels in the nasal cavity, reduce nasal mucosal congestion, relieve nasal congestion and runny nose, and can also cause bronchial dilation to relieve asthma. It is a common medicine used to treat colds and coughs. On the other hand, it can excite the central nervous system and the heart, which can cause anxiety and tension, insomnia, dizziness, headache, palpitations, etc.

Normal medicines contain trace amounts of ephedrine, which can be used to relieve clinical discomfort symptoms through its pharmacological effects. A small amount of short-term use will not cause addiction. However, excessive use will cause poisoning.

Don't take these medicines randomly!

A large proportion of cough syrups and cold medicines used in daily life are ephedrine-based compound preparations.

Catalog of commonly used ephedrine compound preparations

In addition to ephedrine compound preparations, doctors also urgently remind you not to take oseltamivir, which has recently been regarded as a "miracle drug" for influenza: Don't take it indiscriminately!

Oseltamivir is an antiviral drug that inhibits further increase in viral numbers, thereby reducing pathogenicity. It can be used to treat and prevent influenza A and B, but is ineffective against the common cold and bacterial infections.

The main function of oseltamivir is to prevent the spread of the virus, not to prevent the virus from invading. Irregular use or long-term and large-scale abuse may cause genetic mutations in the virus strain and produce drug resistance.

Oseltamivir is a prescription drug and you need to go to a regular hospital for an influenza virus nucleic acid test to confirm whether it is influenza. You should use the drug under the guidance of a doctor. It is not recommended that citizens purchase and use it on their own.
