Healthy Life丨Reasonable meal time arrangement can not only prevent diabetes, but even cancer!

Research shows that eating breakfast after 9 o'clock increases the chance of developing diabetes? Eating well not only affects diabetes, but also prostate cancer and breast cancer.

Breakfast time and diabetes

A French study found that people who had later breakfast times (after 9 p.m.) had a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes (59% higher).

This study surveyed 158,082 French people in the NutriNet-Sante cohort, of whom 116,388 had dietary data. After excluding those who did not meet the study criteria (insufficient data, eating too late, and having diabetes), 103,312 participants were retained (see figure below).

The average age of the participants finally included in the study was 43 years old, and 79% were women. During the average follow-up period of 7.3 years, a total of 963 new cases of type 2 diabetes were found (Figure below).

The analysis found that people who often eat breakfast after 9 a.m. have a significantly higher risk of type 2 diabetes compared to those who eat breakfast before 8 a.m. (Figure below).

Additionally, eating a late dinner (after 10 p.m.) appears to increase the risk, while eating more frequently (about five times a day) decreases the incidence of disease.

Of course, the most important thing is to live a regular life.

【Data source】

The study was jointly carried out by ISGlobal, an institution supported by the "la Caixa" Foundation, and INSERM of France, and the data came from NutriNet-Sante.

NutriNet-Sante is a large-scale (n=171,000) web-based cohort launched in France in 2009 and coordinated by EREN to investigate the relationship between nutrition and health.

EREN is also an organization formed by professionals. It is the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team (CRESS-EREN) under the French Center for Epidemiological and Statistics Research (CRESS).

Participants in the NutriNet-Santé cohort regularly complete questionnaires through a dedicated secure website, providing extensive, high-quality nutritional and non-nutritional data, including repeated data on sociodemographics and lifestyle (yearly), anthropometric measurements (every 6 months), dietary intake (every 6 months), physical activity (IPAQ questionnaire, yearly), and health status (every 6 years).

NutriNet Santé features a very detailed and up-to-date assessment of nutritional exposure and dietary behavior. Usual dietary intake was assessed at baseline and every 6 months thereafter through a series of 3 non-consecutive randomly assigned 24-hour dietary records.

【Eating late and cancer】

Not only type 2 diabetes, the same team at ISGlobal has provided evidence of a relationship between eating an earlier dinner and a reduced risk of breast or prostate cancer.

A population-based case-control study was conducted in Spain from 2008 to 2013 and included 621 prostate cancer cases and 1205 breast cancer cases, as well as 872 male and 1321 female controls who had never worked the night shift.

Subjects were interviewed about meal timing, sleep duration, and chronotype and completed a food frequency questionnaire.

The results of the study found that compared with those who went to bed immediately after dinner, those who went to bed ≥ 2 hours after dinner had a 20% reduced risk of breast cancer or prostate cancer.

Additionally, a similar protective effect was observed in subjects who ate dinner before 9 p.m., compared with those who ate dinner after 10 p.m.

So, don't eat too late, and don't go to bed too early after eating.

【Summarize】

Although there are research and relevant data to support this, these studies still have some limitations. But in any case, regular diet and balanced nutrition are the most important. In addition, there is no need to worry about getting cancer just because you eat one or several breakfasts or dinners late. Sometimes anxiety can cause greater harm to the body .
