Flurry: 183 million Chinese apps downloaded in the Christmas week from December 25 to December 31, 2012

The Christmas season of 2012 set new records for smartphone device activations and app downloads.

Between December 25 and December 31, 2012, Flurry estimates that more than 50 million devices were activated and 1.76 billion apps were downloaded. On Christmas Day, 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated, and 328 million apps were downloaded on Christmas Day.

China's app downloads reached 183 million times in Christmas week

In the first few weeks of December, Flurry monitoring showed that weekly app downloads were 1.07 billion times. In contrast, downloads in the week of December 25-31 increased by 65%, and the number of downloads reached 1.76 billion times, breaking the record for the same period in 2011.

Unsurprisingly, among the top 20 countries, the United States has the most app downloads, accounting for 34.3% during Christmas week. Although Christmas is not a traditional holiday in China, China ranks second with 183 million downloads. According to a recent report by Flurry, China will surpass the United States in terms of app downloads in Q1 2013, with the United Kingdom, Germany, and France ranking 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively. However, the downloads of these three countries are far behind those of the United States and China.

Flurry's data report is based on the monitoring of 260,000 Android and iOS applications. The company said that they can monitor 90% of iOS and Android devices, and its statistical service has been used by 25% of Android and iOS applications downloaded daily.

Flurry believes that 1 billion app downloads per week will become the norm, and by Q4 2013, 2 billion app downloads per week will be reached.
