The delivery man thought it was hot and dizzy, so he went to the hospital for a checkup and found out that his eyes were sick.

Mr. Zou (pseudonym), who thought that his vision was blurred due to long periods of time outdoors in high temperatures, never imagined that he actually had an eye disease.

Mr. Zou, 42, is a food delivery man who has been working for two years. He rides his electric bike through the streets and alleys of the city every day. In the past month, all straight lines in his eyes have become distorted. Mr. Zou thought it was due to long-term exposure to high temperatures and did not pay much attention to it. Until a week ago, Mr. Zou's right eye was blurred, which frightened him so much that he went to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for a check-up.

Yan Jing, chief physician of the hospital's ophthalmology department, found out that although Master Zou had a 4-year history of hypertension, his blood pressure was currently well controlled through treatment. The reason for Master Zou's distorted vision was that he had been in a high temperature environment for a long time, which led to vascular dilation, causing branch retinal vein occlusion and secondary macular edema.

"The macula of the fundus is located directly behind the retina. It is an important part for visual function and can recognize most optical signals such as shape, size, color, and distance," Director Yan Jing introduced. "Macular edema refers to an inflammatory reaction in the macular area, in which fluid infiltrates and forms edema. If the disease enters the progressive stage, in addition to distorted vision, it will also cause severe blurred vision and decreased contrast sensitivity." At present, Master Zou's condition has improved after intraocular medication treatment.

In the summer, Wu Jianhua, deputy director of the Ophthalmology Branch of Hubei Medical Association and director of Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital, also reminded citizens, especially those working outdoors, to wear sunglasses when going out during the day to prevent ultraviolet rays from damaging the retina, and also to provide cooling protection. If you find that straight lines become curved, flat things become undulating, circles become ellipses, or black spots appear in the center of your vision, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
