Eyes are the windows to the soul, and they are an important way for us to understand and feel the world. But as time goes by, our "windows" will also be covered with a layer of "gauze", which is commonly known as cataracts. This cataract that occurs with age is medically called senile cataracts. The main symptom of senile cataract is progressive blurred vision. Globally, senile cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness. As living standards continue to improve, the elderly are paying more and more attention to their quality of life, and of course they are also more concerned about their visual quality. Many people ask, can senile cataracts be prevented? How to prevent it? The cause of senile cataracts is still not completely clear, so its prevention has always been an important issue explored by the ophthalmology community. Wang Jun, deputy director of the ophthalmology department of Beijing Tongren Hospital, recommends that everyone take the following measures to prevent it: 1. Prevent your eyes from long-term, high-intensity ultraviolet radiation The longer the exposure to sunlight ultraviolet rays, the greater the possibility of cataracts. Therefore, the elderly can wear UV-blocking sunglasses when going out in strong sunlight. 2. Prevent dehydration When the human body is dehydrated, the body's fluid metabolism is disordered, which will produce some abnormal chemicals that damage the lens and cause cataracts. For patients who already have cataracts, dehydration can make the condition worse. Therefore, once you encounter diarrhea, vomiting, heavy sweating, etc. caused by various reasons, you should replenish water in time, and usually just drink boiled water or tea. 3. Strengthen nutrition and eat more foods rich in vitamins, trace elements and proteins For example, you can eat more fruits rich in vitamins such as apples, bananas, cherry tomatoes, more dark green vegetables such as spinach, bok choy, broccoli, and more protein-rich foods such as fish. 4. Control diabetes Diabetes is a high-risk factor for cataracts, and controlling diabetes can reduce the occurrence of cataracts. 5. Avoid cataract-prone factors. The lens is sensitive to various ionizing radiations, such as X-rays, infrared rays, ultraviolet rays, etc. Various chemical poisons and drugs in life can cause cataracts, such as glucocorticoids, chlorpromazine in drugs, trinitrotoluene (TNT), fluoride and various heavy metal ions in chemical preparations. In addition, you should maintain a happy mood, quit smoking, ensure adequate sleep, pay attention to eye hygiene and health, and actively prevent and treat systemic chronic diseases such as diabetes. Starting from these little things in life, we will be able to prevent and delay the development of senile cataracts, allowing the elderly to enjoy a clear and beautiful life.
