How to check progesterone level?

The progesterone that people often talk about is actually called progesterone, also known as progesterone hormone. This is a hormone secreted by the female ovaries and is one of the many pregnancy hormones. When women ovulate, the amount of progesterone in their bodies will increase. In addition, once pregnant, the progesterone level will also be relatively high. But in any case, progesterone needs to be maintained within the normal range. Too high or too low will cause problems. So how do we check the level of progesterone in medicine?

How to check progesterone level?

The progesterone test is conducted by drawing venous blood from the pregnant mother. Since the progesterone content is not affected by eating, the progesterone test does not require fasting, and the mother can drink water during the test. Generally, after the examination in the morning, the results can be obtained in the afternoon.

Progesterone test precautions

During the entire menstrual cycle of a normal non-pregnant woman, the progesterone level is lowest before ovulation, begins to rise after ovulation, and reaches its highest level during the luteal phase. Before ovulation, the progesterone level in body fluids should be less than 2 ng/mL, and after ovulation it should be greater than 5 ng/mL. If you become pregnant, the progesterone level will initially remain at the level of the luteal phase. After the placenta is formed, the hormones secreted by the placenta will increase the progesterone level in the pregnant woman's body to 100-200 ng/ml, which is dozens to hundreds of times that of a non-pregnant woman.

What to do if progesterone is too low? If the progesterone value is lower than 25 and there is no fetal heartbeat, then there is no hope and the only option is to give up the fetus. However, if there is still a fetal heartbeat, you can continue to protect the fetus, so you must pay attention to progesterone, especially in the first few months.

What are the causes of low progesterone? Generally there are three situations: first, endocrine dysfunction; second, endocrine abnormalities in the corpus luteum; and third, follicle development disorders. All three of these will result in low progesterone levels.

How do I check if I have low progesterone? Generally, the check is conducted around one month into pregnancy. Once the pregnant woman's progesterone level is found to be low, a strategy to preserve the pregnancy should be adopted.

Some people ask if diet therapy can be used? In fact, diet therapy is difficult with the current medical level, so it is not recommended.

So what to do if progesterone is low? If the progesterone level is low, the doctor will usually prescribe progesterone supplements or give the pregnant woman a progesterone injection. Generally, most people will only need the injection for half a month or more days to recover. The decision on whether to take medicine depends on your recovery situation. Just listen to your doctor. Generally, everything will be fine and you don't need to worry too much.
