What is the knowledge of safe contraception?

Nowadays, people don’t know much about contraception. They just know that they should wear condoms or take contraceptives during sexual intercourse. However, some contraceptives are unsafe. Not only may they cause unwanted pregnancy, but they may also cause harm to women’s bodies. So let’s learn about what safe contraception knowledge is.

Basal body temperature refers to the body temperature measured when a person wakes up after a long period of sleep and before engaging in any activity.

The basal body temperature of normal women of childbearing age changes cyclically, just like the menstrual cycle. This change in body temperature is associated with ovulation. Under normal circumstances, a woman's basal body temperature is lower before ovulation and rises after ovulation. This is because the corpus luteum formed after ovulation and the secretion of more progesterone stimulate the temperature regulation center of the hypothalamus, causing the basal body temperature to rise, which continues until the next menstrual period before it begins to drop. The basal body temperature of the next menstrual cycle repeats the above changes.

Record the basal body temperature measured every day on a temperature record sheet and connect them into a curve. You can see that the body temperature is lower in the first half of the menstruation and rises in the second half of the menstruation. This temperature curve with low temperature at the beginning and high temperature at the end is called a biphasic temperature curve, which means that the ovaries have ovulated, and ovulation generally occurs before the body temperature rises or in the process of rising from low to high. Some people believe that the lowest point before the body temperature rises is the ovulation day, but this does not happen in most cases, and only about 20% of women experience this phenomenon. The 3 days after the basal body temperature rises is the fertile period, and the period from the 4th day until the next menstrual period is the "safe period after ovulation."

Basal body temperature measurement can only indicate that ovulation has occurred, but cannot predict when ovulation occurs. Therefore, it can only determine the safe period after ovulation, but cannot determine the safe period before ovulation. This problem can be solved if the calendar method and cervical mucus observation method are combined.

In most cases, basal body temperature measurement is very reliable for determining the safe period after ovulation, but sometimes the temperature curve is irregular, so the exact time of ovulation cannot be determined. In this case, the safe period cannot be used for contraception.

In order to improve the accuracy of measuring basal body temperature, the mercury column on the thermometer should be shaken to below 35°C before going to bed every night, and it should be placed on the bedside table or next to the pillow so that it is readily available when used, and try to minimize movement. If you get up and take the thermometer, your basal body temperature will rise, making the temperature value for the day meaningless. For women who work the middle or night shift, it is best to measure basal body temperature when they first wake up after sleeping for 4 to 6 hours.

The above article introduces in detail the knowledge of safe contraception, so it is best not to use some emergency contraceptive pills, because this may cause some side effects in female friends' bodies, even lead to irregular menstruation, or cause some fever.
