YouGov: 65% of Indians plan to replace TikTok app

YouGov's latest survey shows that in the absence of TikTok, 65% of urban Indians are likely to turn to other apps or start using video apps that originated in India or non-China.

Among generations, Millennials (69%) were most likely to switch to an alternative to TikTok, compared to 54% for Gen Z. Again, men were more likely than women to hold a similar view (70% vs. 59%).

Interestingly, in the absence of a Chinese platform, 68% of TikTok content creators are likely to switch to an Indian or non-Chinese version of the video-sharing app.

Instagram Reels, Facebook's answer to TikTok, has been welcomed by over 62% of urban Indians who have tried it and are likely to continue using it.

Almost as many people have a similar opinion about the Cheez app in Singapore (59%), and Cheez has higher appeal among the Tier III public in India compared to residents of Tier I cities (80% vs 42%).

In addition to these foreign apps, more than half have tried the local app Roposo and are likely to use it in the future (54%).

Until recently, TikTok was one of the most popular apps in India with a user base of over 200 million. Among its various features, the option to create videos (72%) appealed the most to users. Its vast music library (58%), user-friendly interface (56%) and easy creation of content in regional languages ​​(54%) were some of the other features that attracted people to the platform, which could be the key takeaways for brands trying to replicate the success of the Chinese app in India.

Despite the respondents’ interest in switching to alternatives to TikTok, the popularity of the Chinese app cannot be completely dismissed. An overwhelming majority (63%) of urban Indians support lifting the ban on TikTok, with only 21% of respondents still opposing lifting the ban in India.
