New super comprehensive food nutrition score, beef and cola scored so low?

Food Compass is mainly used to comprehensively evaluate food attributes. It evaluates food, beverages or food combinations based on 54 different attributes of 9 major food health indicators, including nutritional ratio, vitamins, minerals, food ingredients, additives, degree of processing, specific fats, fiber and protein, and phytochemicals.

The researchers used Food Compass to rate 8,032 U.S. foods, which were grouped into 12 categories:

Beverages, fruits, grains, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, meat and eggs, seafood, dairy products, fats and oils, seasonings, snacks and desserts, various food combinations.

The full score is 100 (the healthiest) and the lowest score is 1 (the least healthy). Foods with a score of ≥70 are encouraged to be consumed, foods with a score of 31-69 should be consumed in moderation, and foods with a score of ≤30 should be consumed as little as possible.

The average score of these 8,032 foods was 43.2.

The worst performing “class” was Snacks & Desserts, with an average score of 16.4, while the best performing “class” was Legumes & Nuts & Seeds, with an average score of 78.6.

Other “excellent classes” include vegetables and fruits, with average scores of 69.1 and 73.9 respectively.

Among them, starchy vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, etc.) had an average score of 43.2, while green vegetables were 88.2.

Except for dried fruits and canned fruits, almost all fresh fruits got full marks. Fruits with higher sugar content, such as bananas, red dates, figs, etc., scored lower (but still >70).

The average score of seafood was also high, reaching 67.0; while its "brother class" meat and eggs, the average score was only 32.7.

Specifically, among meat and egg products, beef had an average score of 24.9, while poultry meat was better, with an average score of 42.6.

The average score for beverages was 35.3, with sugary sodas and energy drinks scoring an average of 27.6 (oh, that's really cool), and 100% fruit or vegetable juice scoring an average of 67.

The average scores for the remaining food items were 33.8 for cereals, 43.1 for dairy products, 29.7 for fats and oils, 42.2 for condiments, and 33.1 for various food combinations.
