In the Archean Era, Mount Tai was once part of a huge depression zone or trough in western Shandong, where thick muddy sand and basic volcanic materials accumulated. Later, after the Taishan Movement, the folds and uplifts became a huge mountain system, and a series of faults, magmatic activities and metamorphism occurred at the same time, forming the Taishan Complex composed of various metamorphic complexes and igneous rocks.

In the early Paleozoic, the vast area of ​​North China dropped sharply, and the ancient Taishan Mountain also sank below the sea level. On the basement erosion surface of the ancient metamorphic complex, a set of Cambrian-Ordovician limestones with a thickness of nearly 2,000 meters was deposited. At the end of the Middle Ordovician, under the influence of the Caledonian Movement, the entire North China region rose to land.

During the Mesozoic Era, a NEE-trending Taiqian fault was formed on the southern foot of the mountain. The original ancient Taishan Mountain, located on the northern plate of the fault, continued to rise and suffer from weathering and erosion.
